HOW can anyone like this show ?!?!?!

Not only does Dragnet have the worst actors they could get (with the exception of the wonderful Harry Morgan) but the stories are so phony and unrealistic it makes me cringe! The Blue Boy dude freaking out on acid was a joke as was all the other people who used and their reactions. Oh and the people who were high on pot and their kid drowned in the tub? Give me a break !! But the worst was the guy Wally who was beating up his kid and his wife's reaction to it. I sure hope she didn't leave her day job! Sorry but the show just sucks.

The staccato delivery. The marching in unison. The cartoon character "villians". The preachy scripts. Harry Morgan's tackle box lunch pail. The phrase "yassir" The nod of approval that Joe Friday gives HIMSELF after every sentence all adds up to------ EXCELLENCE. I LOVE THIS SHOW.

You are entitled to your opinion, but when it comes to the style and concepts, watch ANY show from the time period. That's how they look and feel. The cases are based on real cases, hence "The story you are about to see is true, the names have been changed to protect the innocent." bit, not just flowery speech.

People like it because it's a little campy, and silly now compared to what we have. But that doesn't make it suck. Without shows like this we would not have the current crime shows or many other forms of entertainment we now enjoy.

I mean, are you the type to who mocks the elderly for not being up to date on everything? Or makes disparaging and rude comments about people of the past for not coming up with everything we have now? Because everything we have started on a foundation made by someone else, then others took that, built on it and improved it. To claim it sucks because it was a product of it's time is juvenile and asinine.

I live in the past, but not my own.

Don't try to judge a program written in 1970 by today's standards. It is totally unfair to criticize based on today's values and political correct culture. Things were different back then and that is when the show was filmed.

You mean 1967.

tuffigirl1, I differ with your opinion. I'm sorry, but you should realize that criticizing the ACTING on Dragnet is unfair to the actors. Please read some of the posts pertaining to Jack Webb's eccentricities. Webb WANTED the acting that way to further promote his hypocritical position on Pot. Webb was the kind of man who really didn't take the time to differentiate between the Marijuana THC effects and the HALLUCINOGENIC effects of Acid or PCP that often times the young actors/actresses would be depicted as "Lacing" their pot with on the show. I think this was his way of puffing up his dislike of pot and promoting Marijuana as a HUGELY DANGEROUS GATEWAY DRUG.

I pretty much agree with everything you said. For me, though, it's the classic "it's so bad it's good" show. I watch it for laughs - in particular, the episodes about drugs never let me down. Politically, the show is probably the purest expression on television of Nixon's Silent Majority. It's an artifact from a time our country was torn apart.

Remember, this show used to be a radio show, with a unique, no-nonsense manner of delivery. This program preserves the pace of that original show, which is what 1967 audiences would expect.

I personally think we could use a lot more Sgt. Fridays in our confused, violent world of ours. America threw away the message of Sgt. Friday, and we are now suffering as a result.
