What are the greatest musicasl?

What do you think are the greatest musicals? Here are my selections:

1. My Fair Lady
2. Oliver
3. Chicago
4. Gigi
5. Fiddler On The Roof

If this board gets any reaction, I'll justify my selections. For now, I'll just rate them one thru five.

No mention of On the Town, Carmen Jones, Love Me or Leave Me, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, Anchors Aweigh, Funny Girl, Flower Drum Song, A Star Is Born, etc?

What? A signature?

I love Carmen Jones and Flower Drum Song. I don't think that Anchor's Aweigh is a great musical. It had its moments though.

Do any of these musicals have as many hit songs as My Fair Lady? I think not, therefore, it is my number one choice. I recently revisited West Side Story and was absolutely bowled over by the music and the direction. It easily goes to number two. The rest as follows:

1. My Fair Lady
2. West Side Story
3. Oliver
4. South Pacific
5. Seven Brides For Seven Brothers
6. High Society
7. Carousel
8. Singing In The Rain
9. Annie Get Your Gun
10.Guys And Dolls

bilko-1,

Wow, we're on the same page. Except for High Society, I agree with your picks. Most people rank Singing In The Rain as the best "made for movies" musical. However, I like Gigi better.

I'm not an expert on musicals and haven't seen a lot of them, but here are my favorites:

1. West Side Story
2. The Sound of Music
3. The Wizard of Oz
4. The 5000 Fingers of Dr. T

The last one has the advantage of lyrics by Dr. Seuss, too.

Geez there are too many. I'm a sucker for musicals and I do like all genres. Here's a list without much of a ranking.

Chicago
Cabaret
My Fair Lady
Mary Poppins
West Side Story (just for the music, story is cliche as hell)
Mama Mia (also just music, story is too fluff for me)
Les Misérables
How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying (but not the movie version)
The Nightmare Before Christmas
The Corpse Bride

I also like most of the animated musicals.

Please don't compare me with the hormonal teenagers. Youth is not one of my strong traits.

2) Grease
3) The Wizard of Oz
4) My Fair Lady
5) Oklahoma
