Remake Zorba the Greek?

This is one movie that screams for a modern remake. In Color - shot completely on location in Crete or a beautiful Greek island. Stick to the book and just tell the story with nice scenery, great acting and fantastic music.
Director: Alan Parker
Soundtrack: Vangelis
Basil: Colin Firth or Pierce Brosnan
Zorba: Antonio Banderas with older make-up
The Widow: Rachel Weisz (too young?) Isabella Rossellini (too old?)
Madame Hortense: Meryl Streep
Anybody have any ideas?

I am sorry, but you are out of your mind. That would be as if someone from Pixar Studios repainted Sixtine Chapel!

reply

First off why ruin a classic!!!! My mom came to America from crete and i grew up on this movie. Also, no1 even suggests to name any Greek ators who should be playing Greek parts. The final and last point is you CANNOT replace Quinn; if he can convince my mother he was Greek, which she found out later he wasnt, then that is an acting achievement and shouldn`t be F`ed with!

Wow, imagine that, a Pixar version of MichaelAngelo painting the Sistine Chapel roof. Great idea, I'll start on the script now, it's gonna be a hit!

Oh, good grief!! If it ain't broke, don't fix it!! I'm sorry, Kathy, but the idea of a remake of "Zorba, the Greek" is a travesty. Yes, it would be like getting Walt Disney to repaint the Mona Lisa.

I don't mean to be unkind, but this is just an awful idea.

I had enough trouble watching the second Pirates of the Caribbean movie. I loved the first one. When will we ever learn to leave well enough alone?

while you were proposing the idea, probably you were thinking about the magnificient scenery of crete.i agree that it would be amazing to see the forest, the sea etc in color but remaking this magnificient work of art would be a crime.of course there are many talented actors or actresses but i don't think that there is another antony quinn.when the best is done, there is no need to make cheap reproductions of it.

What? Would you repaint the Mona Lisa just because the clothes are dated? If it ain't broke don't fix it. Zorba ain't broke.

reply

i agree,
if they should ever remake the movie at least put a greek actor from Greece with a heavy greek accent. filmed in crete and make everything natural

reply

Yes there are many gifted Greek actors that should be employed if they do a remake. Greece is wonderful!

reply

Leave it alone! Not all films need to be remade or colorized. It's a classic.

This film should be buried in some deep vault and forgotten forever...I just saw it and I am still in mild shock over how very bad it was...I was expecting a film that wouuld be an ode to life...and instead I got this...unspeakable crap!

reply

Are you saying that the film didn't have nice scenery, great action of phantastic music? Because the one I watched had.

reply

I strongly agree that it would be totally be moot to remake this classic. I am enchanted with the idea of a modern cast....Nobody could even dust off Quinn's shoes though! He is an honorary Greek. Don't forget that Basil was greek thought born and raised in England.

ZORBA - Kevin Kline, he was fantastic in French Kiss, certainly could do the accent.
BASIL - Jake Gyllenhaul or perhaps even Ben Affleck
THE WIDOW - Monica Belucci was a good choice (i hated Penelope Cruz's accent in Captain Corellis Mandolin. Melina Kanakarides (from csi new york).
MADAME HORTENSE- Irene Pappas (the original widow, I think she would rock, too bad she is too old now for the part). Olympia Dukakis

HELL NO!

Leave this alone it is a classic. It's a very misunderstood picture, with people never having seen it believing it to be about dancing and smashing plates. If it were remade studios would pander to this and it'd become ridiculously dance focussed and lose all the deep philosophical atmosphere that is present, both from the work of Kazantzakis and the brilliant performances.

Remaking this would be a total crime. It would be saying the original is inadequate.
Studios should come up with original ideas or at least adapt stuff that hasnt already been done. There's a vast wealth of other Kazantzakis novels that if done well would make brilliant cinema.

What a stupid idea and what a silly cast. Antonio Banderas? You must be joking?

reply

That will be good for the original movie. Then maybe some younger lads, ladies will watch this cult movie.

reply

I am quite passionate about the book.
And although I really enjoy the film, I don't believe in having one hard-lined interpretation of the original writing (which is truly perfection). Shakespearean classics are incessantly re-engaged and with each interpretation offer a new perspective on the original brilliant writing.
By that same token, I don't feel as precious about doing a remake as many of my fellow note posters.
I don't know, however, that there is an American or English actor in the public eye today that could do this role. Antonio Banderas is definitively not the embodiment of Katzo's Zorba. I think filmmakers would have to search elsewhere and under the radar. Perhaps in European theater-- an unknown.
In addition, after Quinn did his beautiful rendition audiences seem to have an imprint that Zorba should be a large or heftier character when in fact he is originally written as a wily, energetic and lithe character. The opposite of Quinn's heft.
It's a beautiful story. If someone wants to reapproach it and give it a go, it would be remarkable to be able to reintroduce this timeless story to modern audiences.
