Remake Zorba the Greek?

This is one movie that screams for a modern remake. In Color - shot completely on location in Crete or a beautiful Greek island. Stick to the book and just tell the story with nice scenery, great acting and fantastic music.
Director: Alan Parker
Soundtrack: Vangelis
Basil: Colin Firth or Pierce Brosnan
Zorba: Antonio Banderas with older make-up
The Widow: Rachel Weisz (too young?) Isabella Rossellini (too old?)
Madame Hortense: Meryl Streep
Anybody have any ideas?

Remake? Please don't! Who else besides Anthony Quinn could "BE" Zorba? Who else could compose a better theme and score than Mikis Theodorakis? Who else if not a greek director like Mihalis Kakogiannis could understand and to depict better the world, way of life, traditions and mentality of greek peasants?

Zorba the Greek is perfect as it is. I'd hate to see somebody not named Antonio Quinn playing Alexis Zorba.

When you read the great book of nikos kazantzakis you can't visualize other actor than anthony queen in role of zorbas.

although the original is classic and needs no update, seeing as remakes are so hot right now, it would be a nice one to see. But seriously, Banderas? nope nope nope.
He's great but he's too cliched mediteranean looking, not a very imaginative choice.

Remake? Only if it is a purely Greek production.
Today's Hollywood, with its pernicious corporate influence would disgrace the memory of all the great people involved in the original book and movie. The stupid and phoney Hollywood of today would be 100% incapable of making a better film.
Remake is an awful idea.
Leave well enough alone.
When Hollywood learns how to make good movies again, then maybe, perhaps, but not necessary when a previous film will easily be perceived as superior by a majority.
Otherwise, forget it.
Let Hollywood make its crap movies about its own people.
But not Zorba!

I agree with others, first off, it's a classic. LEAVE IT ALONE! But if it were remade, you must have Greek actors. Quinn was forgivable because he was an amazing actor and he had the spirit of a Greek. You cannot teach or fake that.

You can't remake Gone With The Wind, you can't remake Casablanca and you can't remake Zorba.

I've had enough Meryl Streep! Someone else please.

Director should be no one else but Martin Scorsese, he has made a movie based on an other novel of this author (Nikos Kazanzakis), "The Last Temptation of Christ", and what a movie it is!

In the mid 80s there were plans for a remake again with Quinn but with John Travolta for the Alan Bates role.

It came to nothing. Maybe thankfully so!

Its that man again!!
