Did this really need to be re-made?

I don't think so classic movies are classic for a reason.

And if they needed to remake it, they should have cast someone better than Steve Martin.

reply

It's as bad joke as nearly a good joke and also could be such a good question that could be answered only by a question: Is there really anyone better than Steve Martin?!

highly doubtful...

Maybe in 20 years from now i will have an answer. So for the time being, as Steve would put it: don't sweat the petty things and don't pet the sweatty things.

have a nice day...

I think Steve Martin is the worst they could get. Did not match Peter Sellers at all. Too energetic and completely different than the orginal.

reply

I agree. He looked stupid in the commercials trying to do the French accent.

"Is there really anyone better than Steve Martin?!"

To make a nonsense of the whole concept? No, there isn't. Martin cannot even approach the ironic genius of Sellers.

And to the poster who whines that people 'whine too much'? some of us understand classic cinema. Evidently, judging by your post, some do not.

Redoing a classic is simply dumb. Just look at the idiotic Ocean's 72 and a 1/2.

reply

No, there was no reason whatsoever to remake this classic.
The new one might have stood on its own as a movie had the original never been made, but it will always be a pale copy of this one.

They might be boring or slow, but they are quality movies.

reply

Agreed it is NOT a remake at all. Not at all. It is simply Martins take on the franchise. Hes not trying to replace Sellers or anything of the sort.

People whine too much.

reply

i think that this movie is boring and slow

reply

I fully agree with your opinion. Martin is absolutely no funny.

reply

its not just that. no-one can replace peter sellers. why do people want to resurrect, remake, restart or otherwise to films. it just ruins them

reply

whether it needed to be remade or not....the new pink panther is hillarious

all i can say is that those who find these movies boring have very short attention spans.

reply

some films do get remade but will pick pink panther or steve martin to be in it
for that matter
does any one know the names of his children
Samantha Peters is one and mike is the other but i cant find any pichares

reply

money is the only reason they remake fantastic films like the original Pink Panther.
No one in there right frame of mind could have ever thought that anyone could do Peter Sellers credit.
Lets hope that people stop going to cinema to watch them at some point.

Yes, as you say, they should never watch any Pink Panther sequels, you're right. The original and nothing else, i understand your philosophy very well, lol.

reply

That is not the case. Martin had his own good series titled" "Father of the Bride", and shouldve stuck with that.

Moviegoers today are idiot, there are exceptions of course.

but you see, the Steve Martin movie wasn't a re-make... it just happens to have the same title as the first one... it started out as a prequel, but they apparently tossed that idea... if anything, the Steve Martin is a REBOOT for the series... they changed a lot of stuff, including the origin of the diamond and even Clouseau's accent and personality... as i see it, he wasn't even meant to be the same person Peter Sellers depicted... and taken in that light, i can at least appreciate what they were trying to do...

This was supposed to be a futuristic version of the Pink Panther classics. How can you respect that? It was horrible. No need to try to re-do something thats already good! I dont care how they changed the story, the main character's name was Clouseau, and he was looking for a diamond that was pink! Sounds the same to me!

no, this was supposed to be a depiction of what the Pink Panther series would look like in today's world... nothing futuristic about it!

...the main character's name was Clouseau, and he was looking for a diamond that was pink! Sounds the same to me!

do you also think that Casino Royale (1967) is a remake of Dr. No??? give me a break! you cannot possibly watch The Pink Panther (1963) and The Pink Panther (2006) back to back and seriously tell me there's anything more in common than just the name of the main character! and since when does one character's name make it a remake?! in 1963, Clouseau was protecting the diamond from a would-be thief, but in 2006, he's solving a MURDER! find me a clip of Peter Sellers commenting on how a body has fallen within a chalk line and a clip of Steve Martin disguised in a suit of armor, and then we'll talk!

ugh!

reply

All previous efforts to remake The Pink Panther were utter hatchet-jobs,
but since I saw Sacha Baron Cohen in Hugo I'd like to see him as Clouseau in a future endavour!!!

reply

I seem to remember that the remake was okay but not great.

However, the remake was MUCH better than the awful sequels which were filmed in the late sixties and seventies.

I agree this should not have been re-made. Steve Martin is a brilliant writer and performer -- but miscast as Inspector Clouseau. Peter Sellers is funny because he is so serious and takes himself so seriously. Steve Martin does not do accents well. He is more of a physical comic, but his style is all wrong for this character.
