Hi Gloriamorin. Most of the replies you got cover a very narrow period of filmaking. Excepto one, this list are lists of personal favorites.
I agree 100% with Jean-Luc Godard when he said: "Film begins with D.W. Griffith and ends with Abbas Kiarostami." Scorsese said: "Kiarostami represents the highest level of artistry in the cinema.". Kiarostami added: "This admiration is perhaps more appropriate after I am dead."
So here's the "definitive" list (made by the trascendental "me"):
1. Intolerance
2. Battleship Potemkin
3. Metropolis
4. Citizen Kane
5. Rashomono
6. The Apu Trilogy (Satyajit Ray)
7. Fellini's 8-1/2
8. The Godfather (The Coppola Trilogy!!)
9. The Kiarostami Trilogy (Where's the Friend's Home (87); And Life Goes On (91) Through the Olive trees (94).
10. Farewell My Concubine.
(Number 11 would be Godard's "Breathless")
My list of "favorite" films (the subjective "me") is something else. Some of these films will be there (certainly, Eight and a Half, Citizen Kane, etc.), but also "Scaramouche" (the Stewart Granger version), "The Third Man", "The 10 Commandments", "Yankee Doodle Dandy", "Shoot the Piano Player", "Vertigo", "Cat People", "Ship of Fools", Judgment at Nuremberg", "Casablanca", "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance", "Tales of Terror", "The Bellboy", etc.
Needs more Tarkovsky love!
