If you think it's the best show from the '60s...

what would be #2? I'd go with The Invaders.

reply

I agree with Whackagnat: The Fugitive and The Twilight Zone. I'd say Alfred Hitchock Presents was the third best.

reply

I have to go with Star Trek as #1. It's been a big influence on my life and my tastes. :-)

However, some of my favorite shows (some spanning the 50s and 60s) include 77 Sunset Strip, Perry Mason, Maverick, The Virginian, 12 O'Clock High (fantastic writing!), and Burke's Law. Thought I'd drop in a few top shows that I didn't see listed.

But really guys, how can we all be forgetting .....

Batman!!! :-)

But since we're really on the subject of The Fugitive, I was always amused that The Incredible Hulk was really just The Fugitive with a big green alter-ego. LOL

The Untouchables. Ran from 1959 to 1963.

reply

Twilight Zone
The Fugitive
The Defenders
The Outer Limits
Way Out
Arrest & Trial

These aren't necessarily in order (it,s sometimes tough)

Honorable mentions

Combat
Thriller
Naked City
That Was the Week That Was
The Avengers
And although perhaps more of a guily pleasure, The Saint

It would have to be Gunsmoke, the longest-running TV show at the time.

I wish I had been old enough to watch these mid-60s TV shows. I love watching them on the nostalgia channels but it would've been interesting to experience them when they first aired.

All I remember is that this show because it was a series ( not a show where the plot was or had to be solved in under an hour) we were at the edge of our seats and while we could miss a show like Combat etc we had to know and follow every episode to see how Kimble persevered relentlessly to catch the "one arm man" because he thought he was the killer. The policeman relentlessly chasing Kimble because (and we didn't know until the end Why) we were starting to doubt that he was on the side of the law. This one the top number 1 in my book.

Wait, what?
Put it in spoiler cover but I think I missed something.
I thought he kept chasing him even, as if he didn't have anything else to do, and across state lines, even though he had plenty of evidence over the years that Kimble obviously didn't do it because he just couldn't lose his prisoner and he was a jerk. Sure his character was the ultimate antagonist but did anybody like him?

. Ephemeron.

Might be spoilers!

It's been a long time since I watched this but I always thought the policeman was hiding something and that he knew Kimble was innocent. He wanted to be the one that caught Kimble. Yes you are right, he was a jerk but I still think it was a cracker of a drama and would be good to watch again.

Gerard learned that Kimble was a man of high moral fiber but didn't actually uncover evidence of his innocence. In any case, he was doing his job.

To the earlier poster, people did tune in faithfully to see what would happen but Gerard only appeared in about 1/4 of the episodes, and when he did appear, the ratings soared because those were the episodes no one wanted to miss.

Mister Ed! Twilight Zone, The Fugitive, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Gilligan.....

My favorite shows at the time, when I was a kid, in random order as they occur to me while I'm typing (some started in the '50s but were still going in the '60s):

Sea Hunt
The Rifleman
Bonanza
Father Knows Best
The Twilight Zone
The Outer Limits (but it scared the hell out of me when I was eight!)
I Dream of Jeannie
The Man from U.N.C.L.E.
The Avengers
I Spy
Combat!
Batman
The Wild Wild West
Get Smart
Star Trek
The Monkees
Tarzan

My current (2023) favorites from the 1960s, in no particular order:

The Rifleman
Perry Mason
I Spy
The Dick Van Dyke Show
Get Smart
Star Trek (although I'm burned out from watching it too much)
