Terrible movie!!

I just saw the restored print at New York' Film Forum. This was a snoozer. I was bored out of my mind. The first thing that's wrong with this movie is its near 3-hour running time. There's no reason why this relatively small movie needed to be 3 hours.

It was episodic and pointless. I'm a cinephile, and love great movies and classics, but I have to say I have never been a Fellini fan. He's a stylist, but not much of a storyteller.

I don't have a signature.

I believe you are a cinephile and love cinema, but maybe you not used to movies like Dolce Vita, where at first sight, everything seems pointless and stupid, but when you start to understant the real meaning, you find a simply wonderful movie.

Don't look at the movie for it scenes, but for the meaning of each scene, and how they contribute for the story.

Fellini is a great storyteller, he tells stories like no one ever did, and when we understand his stories, we never forget it...

This is the closest thing to a novel on film that I've ever seen. It concerns the bright promise of brilliant youth denied, degraded, and degenerated into the stooge and pimp of vapid wealth.

You are an idiot. It is a masterpiece. One of the best movies ever made.Fellini is a genius.

I consider myself a cinephile as well. A few years ago I tried to watch Fellini's Casanova on IFC. By the time I got an hour into the actual film, I had taken probably four or more breaks of 5, 10, or more minutes. With that realization, I said screw it and deleted the film from my TiVO. I made it all the way through La Dolce Vita, even though my interest waned several times and that three hours felt more like five by the end. I, too, found it very hard to get into. Even the parts that I did have some enjoyment of were diminished by the constantly dubbed dialogue which was incredibly distracting. That combined with the soft focus in many scenes made it impossible to tell who was talking several times. I am not a slave to conventional storytelling and character development, but the loose, episodic structure and lack of character development felt an insurmountable obstacle to me. I don't think I would go so far as to call the film pointless, but I think this film is by no means flawless. The problem with a film such as this is that, while many will laud it, it is NOT entertainment. A film that is truly great doesn't need to be entertainment. per se, but La Dolce Vita felt so goddamn arduous. It seems clear to me that Fellini didn't have much desire to let just anyone into his world. I was left feeling cold and that the film, while again I would not say pointless, was inscrutable to too high a degree for me to enjoy it.

Some people might get Fellini. I guess I get Lynch, Cronenberg, and Malick.

LizardKing84....fan of Jim Morrison just like me ;-)...probably you didn't get into this movie because of the dubbed dialogues, fortunately in my country they put legends instead of dubbing voices, and that's the correct thing to do, because we listen to the real voices of the actors, and how they wanted the movie to sound.

This movie is fantastic because it has so much meaning in what at first sight, doesn't seem to have any meaning at all.

Exactly...that's one of the first prerogatives of an artist. A chef at a steakhouse isn't working his craft for the sake of vegetarians.

reply

Of course. Fellini isn't for everyone... otherwise he wouldn't be Fellini :)

you are a terrible movie

You lost me at "not much of a storyteller"

La Dolce Vita tells more of a story about life and the human condition than any other film I know (other than maybe 8 1/2) and is beautifully done.

This picture is flawless and you will deal.

How can you call yourself a cinephile? This is a masterpiece, one of the top ten films ever made!! Maybe you're not watching it as you should, I know Fellini's movies aren't easy to watch, but maybe your point of view isn't appropiate, his movies are not narrative or made for entertaining, but to criticize and show human virtues, flaws and moral dilemmas. It's a very good movie if you let it touch you. Real art, Fellini really portrays and leaves a lot of himself on them.

You probably shouldn't criticize this film and then in the next sentence call yourself a cinephile. You do realize that people can look at your posting history, right? Cinephile is a bit of a stretch.
