Anyone feel this is Hitchcock's best?
Most people would say Vertigo, Psycho, or Rear Window, but I say this film! Anyone agree?

shareIt's my favorite Hitchcock film. I put Vertigo a close second, then Rear Window. It's perhaps worth noting that Foreign Correspondent was Hitchcock's personal favorite, and I can see why. And the Directors Guild of America recently voted Vertigo as the best film of all time, supplanting the longtime champ Citizen Kane.
Interestingly, if you search for the name Cary Grant at imdb.com, the description that appears in the search results is "Actor, North by Northwest."
North by Northwest, Vertigo, Psycho, and Rear Window would be my top 4.
Some of his most famous movies, and perhaps obvious choices, but I feel they're his best work.
NBNW is the prototype action thriller, inspiring everything from Bond, to Raiders; and Psycho the prototype slasher horror movie.

There is a difference between favorite and best. Years ago, I read one of Ebert's columns where he was talking about this. If you asked 100 critics what was the best movie ever made, you'd probably get the usual answers (e.g., Citizen Kane, Casablanca, Godfather, Gone With the Wind). However, if you asked the same 100 critics what was their favorite movie, there's a good chance you'd get 100 different answers. There's the objective assessment of a movie, and then there's the subjective, how you feel about it on a personal level.
On a purely objective, level, yeah, I'd say Vertigo and Psycho are probably Hitchcock's best made files, but North by Northwest is my favorite. For me, it's just the most fun movie he did, the one that provides me more pure entertainment value than his other films.
As that great philosopher Bugs Bunny said, "Something tells me I shoulda stood in bed."
It's not my favorite (that would be SPELLBOUND, possibly because it was the first Hitchcock film I remember seeing knowing it was Hitchcock) but it is definitely one of his best. I'm treating my movie group to it Saturday night.

I think that his best films are Blackmail, Rope, and Dial M For Murder.

sharefor me this is hitchcocks best closely followed by rear window ..watched both many many times and still love watching them..psycho vertigo just do not do it for me
shareYes, Psycho and Vertigo don't do it for me either . . . NxNW is a gem!
shareWithout a doubt I regard this as Hitch's greatest movie. It's nearly perfect and the performances by all are outstanding. I would place Rear Window in second place. Psycho is marred by the wooden inclusion of John Gavin and Vertigo is compromised by Novak's pathetic attempts at being a credible actress.
sharewow this is the best opinion i read about the movie. SO FAR
shareYes, I agree. It's his best work, and it's also one of the best movies of all time.
shareFor me, Hitchcock's best is a toss-up between 'North by Northwest' and 'Rear Window.'
