british 1960's series "the avengers" kind of uk's twilight zone

the other night i saw the twilight zone episode "judgement night" where british actor patrick macnee was guest starring as one of the crew members, and it got me thinking once again and thought i'd bring it up here in case you haven't seen it and want to check it out, at the same time as twilight zone was airing, on uk television macnee was starring as john steed in the fantasy series "the avengers" (don't let the reputation of the 1998 movie turn you off), i've known about that series forever, but after discovering the twilight zone series i kind of thought of the avengers as sort of a britains own twilight zone. perhaps i'm off, but there are at least some similarities in both having a weird vibe though the avengers always had a logical conclusion at the end.

The Avengers wasn't really known for twist endings. However, Steed was certainly debonair, and The Avengers can say one thing that the Twilight Zone can't: It had John Cleese in one episode.

The Avengers was an awesome show. To this day, I am a huge fan of Diana Rigg. She is such a style icon!

Rigg has done everything from "The Great Muppet Caper" to "Game of Thrones". Plus, she was the Best Bond girl bar none.

Rigg and Cleese would have made great additions to "TZ"

My brother Bill has had a lifetime crush on Diana Rigg, and he's a big fan of the Avengers. Tying this all together, he also introduced me to Monty Python in the early 70s and, of course, he's also a Twilight Zone fan.

Now you've got me trying to picture Cleese in TZ. He was 20 in 1959, and I'm not sure what sort of young adult character he would have played.

Cleese might have made a good Roger Shackelforth in "The Chaser."

I don't know about the first half, but I could see him in the second half when he wants to get rid of her.

Palin would probably make a more suitable choice for Shackelforth of the first half.

And Terry Jones might even make a splendid Leila.

I can't see any similarity between The Avengers and The Twilight Zone.

Hammer House of Horror and later Hammer House of Mystery and Suspense, Thriller (UK), Journey to the Unknown, Tales of the Unexpected were more like Twilight Zone than The Avengers can ever be.

Patrick Macnee and Rod Serling were both icons of cool.
