I think Death likes to interact with people. He for all purpose intended was given this job from the very beginning and will not stop until the very end. Bergman made that game of chess represent the story of the film [knight] all of the moves were foreshadowing the events in the film.

I actually am a writer myself and just finished my short film called Father Time, in which my character challenges Death to try and save his daughters life. Here is a link to the IMDB page

My studies into the "Grim Reaper/Death/Father Time/Ferryman/Angel of Death/etc" showed that Death has already seen everything, he is just only doing his job, I do not believe that "Death" is essentially the bad/evil being.
and I hope to make people question that theory.
