Vivien Leigh's character...annoying?

Definitely annoying to anyone for whom her feminine ideal is pathetic. Definitely annoying to anyone who has ever dealt with anyone whose helplessness is learned and further cultivated.

Blanche's biggest statement about herself, "A woman's charm is 50% illusion" is why she is annoying. She's not really talking about cosmetics, perfume, and nice clothes; she's talking about personality. The idea that women have to appear helpless, less intelligent, and less capable than men to make men feel strong and protective is demeaning to both sexes. Such women truly only attract insecure men and the ones that ultimately don't become a burden to their relations and their friends.

I cut her slack on her naivete over Alan; she grew up at a time when such things were never talked about. However, she did become a high school English teacher and therefore had the intelligence to figure out life. Yet she acts proud of not knowing her multiplication tables (unless that's a "poor little me; I'm just a helpless girl" lie).

She is not inherently evil, but she's a lot sicker than she wants to know.

TOTALLY Agree! I watched this movie for the first time last night, and was not impressed!

If you are Stanley Kowalski, yes.

Having read several of Tennessee Williams plays, a common thing about his characters is their dis-likability. I mean, they are good characters and some are more likable than others, but they're not people you'd want to be like. Being around someone like Blanche, a bit alcoholic, manic, unstable, I can imagine it would be annoying. Watching her on screen, though, is wonderful.

Williams and all those things and people you described are what's called "Southern Gothic". Stories in the style range from unnerving and/or sad to outright horror.

I agree, it took something away from the overall film for me, even though I acknowledge her performance as brilliant, I was wishing her scene would finish after too long
