james gagney was the first choice for ROBIN,but i think because of other comitments he could not take it..who thinks he could have done as good a job as flynn???? as good an actor as gagney was i think flynn would have been the better robin......
Perhaps I will say this because I saw Cagney in A Midsummer Night's Dream, but when I try to imagine Cagney as Robin Hood, I keep thinking that he would look more like Peter Pan than Robin.
Of course, I'm not trying to disrespect Cagney, he was great in many movies, but Flynn had the physical appearance, and enough athletic skills, so I vote Flynn.
A Cagney Robin Hood would have been a populist, up from the dirt type. Flynn never played a commoner. He played Robin Hood like a nobleman turned outlaw.
It would have been a totally different movie with Cagney. Flynn's was the correct interpretation. Cagney was athletic; all dancers are. I doubt the short Cagney would have been convincing swinging a huge broadsword.
Absurdity: A Statement or belief inconsistent with my opinion.
Cagney throughout most of the Thirties was a leftist, so the populist, up from the dirt type remark is pretty perceptive. He also would have been terribly miscast. He would have been impressively athletic but that's it. He was entirely wrong for that sort of movie.
I can imagine no one other than Flynn as Robin Hood.
That being said, I love Jimmy Cagney, and IMO, it'd be worth a full admission priced ticket to see him in the part. Cheers! _______________________ What in the wide, wide world of sports is a-goin' on here?
