My wife is a retired teacher, and most of her friends from school are die hard teacher union leftists (except for four who are not). She went to dinner with three of them (all leftists) and one of them was saying she had a hard time with the election, including sleeping issues.
They assume my wife is completely apolitical because she won't discuss any politics with them since they are so far opposed on issues - she just keeps quiet while they stew.

shareIt happens all the time on both sides. The winning sports teams always get invited to the White House, and every year there's a few refusals who differ politically from The President and choose to make a statement.
I would never pass up such an opportunity. I might say "I don't agree with you politically, but thanks for inviting me" during the handshake, but I would still be very honored and proud. It's a privilege so few people get in a lifetime.
