What’s going on?

He's got enough money and a hot wife. Not everyone want to make good movies the entire life just to please the audience.

I will tell you what I think is going on. Fassbender is an actor (And in my opinion, a VERY good one), and actors want to work. A good actor knows that he will not please everyone, and I am sure Michael does not really care about his detractors. A good actor also does not become an actor to win awards. They become an actor because it is what they want to do.
The old saying applies here - "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder", and applied to acting, an actor's performance will not please everyone. You know that you will not like everyone you meet in life, and not everyone you meet will like you. It is a fact of life.
So, whether you like all the roles he is in is up to you, not him.
Personally, I have been pleased with everything I have seen him do. And, I think his beats is yet to come.
Side note: I personally thought that his performance as Erik Lensherr in the X-Men films was magnetic. (Pun intended) Whenever he came into a scene, I couldn't take my eyes off of him. He was truly in control of the scene.

He's not much of an actor, don't know why anyone would say he is.
