There are several reports that the guy was already sighted and reported to the police. The Secret Service snipers also point to him already. The assassin was potentially already to get stopped conventionally and e.g. shot because without having a clear target. After he made the first shot, he had no chance anymore for anything except pressing the trigger while dying.

Here you can see that the sniper raise his head just BEFORE (presumably) the first bullet hits Trump, at the start of the sentence "Take a look what happened". The bullets seems to reach Trump at the end of the sentence, so there was clearly something happening just before the assassin started shooting.

I would say by zooming in that ear looks damaged at the top. Trump heard it zing by so is it possible that round is the one which killed the attendee. He was in the line of fire.
