I am inclined to agree with you. If this were 50 years ago, when folks thought that being gay was terrible, then I can see someone living a lie. But even 27 years ago, gay folks were out and proud. I do feel sorry for his wife.

Maybe because homosexuality was still demonised 27 years ago. The homophobic Section 28 wasn't repealed in England and Wales until 2003.
