I admire J.K. Rowlings for standing her ground.
We need more of these kinds of people in the world.
shareWe need more of these kinds of people in the world.
shareshe's literally woke on every other issue. We don't need her kind.
shareI think you missed the point. OP simply admires her for standing her ground.
shareAs far as I'm concerned, you can be as woke as you like as long as you don't attack and silence your opponents.
shareThat kinda contradicts the whole "woke" thing.
Big part of the woke culture is oppressing other opinions in any way possible. Even ruining other people's lives is in order if it serves "the cause".

Exactly. The U.S. had a core belief of the freedom to state your opinions without being censored or attacked for expressing your ideas in a nonviolent way, but now that freedom is under attack. Except currently if you speak out against, or even state your opinions/beliefs that contradict what the “woke” or “leftist” or “mainstream,” whatever you want to call it, happen to support this week, then they do everything in their power to ruin your reputation, livelihood, even safety and freedom, anything they can, as punishment for not agreeing with the. Yet they are sick/delusional enough to claim that everyone who doesn’t think and act as they want are the fascist bigots who must be stopped. It’s like a terrible joke, except it’s reality. I’m all for differing opinions and beliefs, but don’t punish, silence, and ostracize everyone who doesn’t conform to your ideals, that is not what this country is supposed to be about.
It’s as if they pretend to encourage freedom of ideas and beliefs, except if those ideas/beliefs don’t line up with theirs, then they attack you and claim you are real as accepting and enlightened as they are so you no longer deserve the right to express yourself. If you don’t think and act exactly as they want, then you’re an intolerant bigot, nazi fascist who silenced opposing ideas. It’s so hypocritical and pathetic that it makes me sad that so many think that way. It’s dangerous and bad for the country and it’s people.
That was very eloquently stated Juno. If I could vote it into a “best of the moviechat posts” I would.
shareBack when I first got on the web in the 90s, there were plenty of on-line arguments that often ended with the one thing everyone back then agreed with: "I disagree with what you say but will fight to the death to protect your right to say it". That pretty much ended it.
Today, that's no longer the truth. Anyone with a dissenting opinion of a leftist idea gets shouted down and cancelled. Leftist start swarming and demand advertisers remove support of a program lest they be boycotted.
When I was in college in the 70s, plenty of leftists/socialists/Communist speakers spoke. None of us conservatives shouted them down, demanded they be removed from the program, or otherwise prevented them from telling their lies. It's rare when a conservative gets to speak at a college without a huge controversy from the leftists.
“ Yet they are sick/delusional enough to claim that everyone who doesn’t think and act as they want are the fascist bigots who must be stopped.“
And what is so terrifying and infuriating is that this whole trans rights thing comes at the expense of women’s rights and our freedom to define ourselves and protect our privacy, safety, comfort, jobs, career and educational opportunities, the list goes on and on. So while all of these woke people are on this supposed lefty bandwagon screeching “bigot!” to anyone who disagrees with them, they are trampling upon women’s rights and they think that’s just fine, even the women.
Me too and I am a Harry Potter fan.
shareWhen someone is considered to be standing their ground by supporting biological reality... we've got problems.
share
.. and yet here we are. Strange days indeed.
“When someone is considered to be standing their ground by supporting biological reality... we've got problems.“
The go to response to this specific question is now that: trans people have the opposite sex brains, so biologically speaking, a fully male man who claims to have a female brain is a woman and vice versa.
Here’s a link to the thread in which science is presented on this subject:

Well of course you are going to admire someone for standing their ground with an opinion you agree with. I mean, that's great more power to you, but it hardly validates her views.
I kind of wish she'd stick to writing. She seems to be less divisive when she's not pretending to be the ultimate authority on gender identity. For the record I also felt the same when she made that bizarre announcement that Dumbledore was gay. Like, why is she making these statements that do nothing but incite people with extreme views to jump on a bandwagon and ultimately just cause greater division among us all? It is slightly amusing to me that the people up in arms about her announcing that she had envisaged one of her characters as gay are the same ones claiming her to be a beacon of free speech and moral values for her trans stance. A little fickle, wouldn't you say?
Anyway, good on you JK. You've made your point. Let's see what changes.
I certainly will admire anyone who sticks to their guns on issues I agree with. What difference does that make? From your posts, you support anyone who is anti-family and pro-violence. Like I said before if you can't handle what people post, stick to PBS.
shareWhat part of my response suggests I can’t handle what you post? From where I stand it looks like you might be the one who has a problem with responses that don’t rapturously agree with you.
And don’t be stupid, I abhor violence and have no strong views on families one way or another, apart from having a very good relationship with my own. How strange that you would profess to know anything about me just because I think JK is a bit of a loudmouth who overstates her own importance.
That's exactly right, I don't know anything about you, and you don't know anything about people who post things that you don't agree with. ROFLMAO! Have a good one!
shareAlso Tim, a question I have for you regarding Dumbledore being gay is: do you know many English scholars?
I’m guessing no, you do not, but if you did, you would not be so surprised at Dumbledore’s gayness.
“She seems to be less divisive when she's not pretending to be the ultimate authority on gender identity.“
How did Rowling ever pretend to be the ultimate authority on gender identity?
You should read the essay that sparked this uproar.
What’s wrong with Dumbledore being gay? It’s presumptuous for you to say that she revealed that aspect of one of her character’s backgrounds to divide people or even suggest such a thing or question her motives. It’s a creative decision that probably arose organically.
I didn’t follow the thing about people being up in arms about Dumbledore being gay, but I can certainly imagine that there’s much hypocrisy with those who were up in arms about it who are on board with her trans critical views. However Tim, the truth is, those people probably aren’t super high on the critical thinking abilities scale and so maybe you just shouldn’t pay too much attention to them.
She created the character of Dumbledore, so if she says he's gay, then he's gay. I admit the revelation decreased my enjoyment of the books, but I appreciate that she did not make that character feature explicit in the books.
In general, the new trend of adults making their sexual orientation known to quite young children, makes me very uncomfortable, because it forces the child to think of the adult as a sexual being. I think that is a transgressing of the child's innocence. I just don't think kids should spend time thinking about their sexuality (gay or straight) until they are in puberty. Even then, the message from adults should be something like, "That's fine; You're too young to act on this. Did you do your homework? What would you like to do as a family this weekend? No you can't have candy right now."
I think it was a wise choice that she did not make Dumbledore's sexual orientation explicit in the books. Unfortunately, now that we all know his sexual orientation, kids who read the books will inevitably be sharing that information with each other, thus taking the focus of Dumbledore away from the support he provides to the children who are the main characters, and putting it on something that is really not the kids' problem.
