I've never met him myself, but the stories about him refusing to sign any and all Bond memorabilia makes him seem like a bit of a douche. I understand him wanting to get recognized for other roles he's done over the course of his career as well and not just Bond, but considering how that's the role that's garnered him the vast majority of his fans, it's really kind of a dick move for him to refuse signing those autographs.

And in general, the guy seems to have a rather short fuse about him. Much like the Bond he portrayed, he always seems a step away from losing his shit and shooting a harpoon at someone in virtually every video I've seen of him interacting with people in public. Granted, I've never seen or heard any stories of him being physically violent towards anyone (there was a story, though, that I can't confirm, of him snatching a fan's autograph book away), but he always seems vaguely pissed off and irritated whenever he talks with people. He just comes off as a guy with a massive chip on his shoulder often, someone who's just about ready to explode any time someone tries to make conversation with him.

I don't know, has anyone here met him before?

I disagree. I think people who collect autographs are morons. And the people who do it so they can sell autographed merchandise should have a fire hose turned on them and then be made to get a real job. I don't know how actors and authors etc put up with them.

I always thought, that people who desperatly stand in lines just to get an autographed piece of paper from some celebrity must have really sad and pathetic lifes. What's the point of that?

Well I don't know that they are "desperately" standing in line or that they "must" have "really" sad and pathetic lives either. For all I know they might be cheerfully standing in line and have really happy and fulfilling lives.

I just think that collecting autographs is a silly and useless thing to do for them and a tedious thing for them to impose on actors and the like. But then again maybe some actors are happy to interact with their fans and this is one way of doing it.

i think it's a hobby for them, usually people who are really into movies, or music, and have big collections of those types of media,
everyone's got a hobby

Seems to me not ... it is really up to the artists or whomever whether or not they want to participate in signing memorabilia or autographs, and they should be able to do so without being criticized for it. It is there perogative.

Yeah, but why is it such a big deal to just scribble your name on a piece of paper? It takes literally seconds to do and is merely an expression of fan adoration from those who ask for it. There's literally no good reason I can think of for actors to do this, other than to just be a self-absorbed git who believe themselves to be too important to just be known for one role.

Hell, if he wanted, dude could've made a fortune just signing autographs at fan conventions for the rest of his life and not have to work another day again. Dalton seems like a snob.

No buts, it is always up to the person, and that person owes you nothing, and from this attitude I can see why he would not want to get involved with fans.

You act like I'm some sort of Dalton obsessed fan who got his feelings hurt because my dear beloved Timmy refused to sign my Licence to Kill poster, when I'm anything but. As I stated before, I have never met Timothy Dalton and nor do I intend to. He's far from my favorite Bond and I'm not even the type of guy who goes to conventions to meet celebrities. The only celebrity I've ever met was The Rock, and that was only because I had once worked as a PA on Skyscraper.

If anything, you're the one who needs to grow up by not assuming that anytime someone has a negative opinion of a celebrity, they must have some sort of personal grudge with them. The fact that you turned a civil discussion about an actor into an attack on a person over a difference in opinion makes you the real Timothy Dalton simp here, not me.

Whatever you are, we readers can only know you by what you post here online, and yes, that is what you sound like.

Disagree, his choice.
However if you Google "Timothy Dalton Signature" you get pages of hits of his signature for sale - there is even a copy on his Wikipedia page.

Hasn't he become a bit less arrogant over the years?

He was good fun in Hot Fuzz at least and seemed to be at ease being quite self deprecating in playing a stiff upper crust character.

Obviously, the reporter was trying to get a rise out of Dalton so that they could then take what he said about the matter out of context.

I actually thought he handled that situation pretty well. He clearly didn't want the media in on what had transpired in his personal romantic life, so he politely but sternly told them "no comment" and moved on with his day. Dalton did nothing wrong there in my eyes.

It's the other stories I've heard of him being irritable and short-tempered that led me to this conclusion about him. There's this interesting forum I found on an old James Bond fan site that told a story of how he was apparently quite prickly with an interviewer at a talk for a James Bond fan magazine, as well as a time when he was similarly irritated at a reporter asking him to say "Bond, James Bond" to the camera (https://debrief.commanderbond.net/topic/5996-giving-dalton-another-look/index.html). It's on the third post.

He just comes off as a rather short-tempered, overly serious, stuck up bloke to me.

I do kind of want to chuckle because it's awfully surreal for me to hear Timothy Dalton speak to a weaselly American paparazzo in a real life setting. You have this intense, classically trained, Shakespearean actor with this really deep voice being put on the spot. I mean, Timothy Dalton is probably the last actor or celebrity, that I would imagine being spotted on TMZ or Hollywood TV in this case.
