I've never understood his appeal
I have to skip his episodes of 3rd Rock from the Sun. He's wooden and unfunny.
shareI have to skip his episodes of 3rd Rock from the Sun. He's wooden and unfunny.
sharePeople either get him or they dont. Those that do are hooked for life
shareI use to watch 3RftS and don't even remember him.
shareHe is charismatic as hell and has great chemistry with his co-stars. That is his appeal. Watch Boston Legal. James Spader is a great actor but he couldn't have carried the show by himself, nor would the relationship between his character and Denny Crane have been as enjoyable with another actor other than Shatner in the role. The only person I could see it kinda sorta working is maybe John Lithgow but Shatner edges him out by a wide margin.
shareFilliam Fatner edges out most people ... with his abdomen! ;-)
shareLet's see how you look at 90, sparky.
shareIf people look like their parents my dad is thin and healthy and looks great. Shatner is an physically ugly and unattractive guy, that's just the truth. It doesn't have to do with him or me being 90. Why do you have such an urge to lash out?
shareI have to agree, Shatner has been fat for decades, it started in the 1980s, and I'd say even before.
You get on a chat board to insult a celebrity who has done more than you ever will, and I'm the one lashing out?
shareYou are lashing out with others because you are calling me stupid names and making stupid arguments because I mention that Bill Shatner happens to be bald and overweight, which is the truth. That is not an insult, and it is not directed at you or whomever. Also, I am not the only one who noticed that Shatner is fat and bald, and also people who know him, most people who know him and have been around him do not have many complimentary things to say about him. A fan can think he's great, especially a stupid fan who confuses the roles he plays with the person he is, or the lines he gets to say with the actual writers who wrote them.
I made a playful joke, and you lashed out at me personally. If William Shatner's image and memory is all you have in your life, I am so sorry I offended you with the truth.
Probably the same reason you have the urge to be an ass. Just my guess.
shareBut he likes you.
shareHis appeal is that he was reasonably handsome when he was young, and that he played Capt. Kirk on Star Trek. If he had not been Capt. Kirk I think no one would know who he is today, except that TV actor that we would have seen in background of so many shows and movies.
share
Agree. There are a lot of actors that I see in old movies and reruns that seemed like they just flat out missed that lottery ticket odds big break that would have catapulted them into stardom.
Well, there is alway "TJ Hooker"!
shareTJ Hooker was already wearing toupee and girdle .... which he only got because he was Capt. Kirk.
shareWho care about a toupee, the number of actors that wear them probably exceeds the number that don't just as the number of actresses with fake tits probably exceed the number with natural tits.. Who cares?
As far as acting goes, Shatner always seemed to be a little over the top using too much of the Shakespearian method creep in.. but so he was still entertaining. And I doubt he got work simply because he was captain Kirk, Star Trek was a short run in the 60's and he had several dozen appearances in TV's and movie between that time and revival of Star Trek in the late 70's.
Of course that's why he got work. Barbary Coast ... remember that one. The last time he did not need a girdle. Kirk was a major character in American culture ... of course the man who played him is going to get offers of other roles. But notice ... if he was that good of an actor, why did no one give him parts in any big, or even small movies?
shareShatner has that hard working, everyman appeal. He always is friendly and willing to engage in conversation..real conversation where he'll ask where you're from? how's your family? etc. He wasn't an ass in interviews like Jerry Lewis, who obviously didn't care about anyone in the whole wide world, except himself.
shareDid you ever see the talk show "Raw Nerve"?
shareYes, I thought it was a great talk show, I wish it would have gone on a lot longer. A couple of interviews stand out such as Weird Al and Rush Limbaugh.
shareOdd that I do not find it listed here on MovieChat.
Shatner is a smart man, and that show was interesting in the deeper
subject matter he tried to get to and cover. I respected the effort.
It's on here under the title Shatner's Raw Nerve
https://moviechat.org/tt1071711/Shatners-Raw-Nerve
In total he had 38 interviews over 2 or 3 seasons, probably 2. He might have pushed too hard a few times, probably why he had trouble getting more famous guests.
The web queries on this site are totally dysfunctional.
Search for Raw Nerve and how does that not come up?
( although now it shows up right after I search for Shatner's Raw Nerve )
He's 90 and looks 60....
