Does sound odd, doesn’t it? Before TNG premiered she was listed as Cheryl McFadden. I wondered about the switch to Gates. Turns out that is her mother’s maiden name.
Lots of people do that, I mean use their mom’s name as either a first or last name.
It's actually an Old English name. I suspect it's fallen out of favor in the present except for nostalgic people.
