The famous debate on whether or not he was a Republican.

In my view, very little of his storytelling/messages were what I would call conservative. Very white casts and a fair amount of political incorrectness, yes, but that was true for a lot of filmmakers back then. He also seemed to be obsessed with bashing corporate greed, materialism, yuppies and rich snobs. However, certain jokes and little things here and there (particularly that weird, random news program scene in Uncle Buck) lead me to believe that he could have very well been a Republican. If so, a pretty hip Republican.

Who gives a shit how he might have voted, man? Movies were not usually overt political statements in the 80's. His, in particular, definitely weren't.

OP is a troll who spends his free time hunting for popular American IPs to sow division about. There was nothing political about John Hughes' movies. So sick of these trolls trying so hard to pit Americans against each other.

The guy's dead, so if you are fishing for reasons to cancel him, you are a little too late.

reply

There was no debate, because his movies had nothing to do with politics. You made that debate up.

Stop exploiting American culture to sow division here. Stop wasting everyone's time.

Today's republicans have little to do with republicans of the 1980s, so the question really has no relevance.

Republicans today seem about the same as in the past. The core values haven't changed. The world around them has changed dramatically, most notably the left, which has done an about-face in many areas, but the core Republican values seem to be the same as ever.
