Carrie Fisher’s Daughter Blames James Blunt for Mom’s Death, He Says in Memoir

The singer admitted that he did drugs with Fisher when he lived with the actress.

James Blunt—the singer, songwriter and longtime friend of the late Carrie Fisher—says the Star Wars star’s daughter, Billie Lourd, partially blames him for her mother’s death, according to excerpts of Blunt’s memoir, Loosely Based On A Made-Up Story, published by The Sun.

“I was closer to Carrie than almost anyone else in the world, except my wife,” Blunt wrote of the pair’s relationship.

Blunt was with Fisher when she was found unresponsive just days before she passed away in 2017. A toxicology report found that she had used cocaine in the days prior to her death and that she had heroin, MDMA and methadone in her system. The report declined to state the definitive cause of death, but Lourd has attributed it to her mother’s battle with substance abuse.

“My mom battled drug addiction and mental illness her entire life,” Lourd told PEOPLE at the time. “She ultimately died of it.

She was purposefully open in all of her work about the social stigmas surrounding these diseases.”

In his memoir, Blunt described his failure to confront Fisher over her drug abuse, opting instead to partake in substances with her.

“Charlie, her best friend, confronted her more directly and told her she needed to quit drugs… I took a different approach and did them with her, pretending to myself that I would guide her to redemption one day—just not today,” Blunt wrote. “As a result, her—daughter Billie blames me in part for her death, and no longer speaks to me.”

Weird, James Blunt is not someone I would have automatically thought of as being close friends with Carrie Fisher.

Knowing your part responsible for Princess Leia's death (he must've grown up with those original SW movies like most guys of his age) and the daughter is blaming you for it..

Wow.

Just looking for someone to blame. Loss is tough but blaming the innocent doesn't help anyone. Druggies drug, drinkers drink- it's what they do.

its not the daughter bringing this up though , its jblunt , presumably looking for stuff to pad out his memoir

Innocent? He did drugs with her, in the days before the drugs actually killed her.

Which isn't to say that he killed her or anything, Fisher made her own choices, but as a close friend he had a little influence, and he didn't use it to help her. If I were Fisher's daughter, or a real friend, I wouldn't speak to any of her drug buddies either.

James Blunt says studio pressure to be thin for Disney Star Wars spin-offs led to close friend Carrie Fisher's drug relapse and death at the age of 60

James Blunt has revealed Carrie Fisher felt so pressured by the Star Wars bosses to be thin at 60 years old that it drove her to abuse drugs again which ultimately led to her death.

The You’re Beautiful hitmaker was close friends with Fisher, famed for playing Princess Leia in the franchise, and lived at her house in LA during the 2000s when he was recording his debut album.

Blunt, 50, told an audience at Hay Literature Festival: ‘I just knew that the day before she died when she came back to my house and she'd been really mistreating her body and she'd just got the job again of being Princess Leia in the new Star Wars movies.

‘So she's really on a high and positive but they had applied a lot of pressure on her to be thin, which is what they do, so she spoke about the difficulties that women have in the industry that men are allowed to grow old and women are not.

‘She had to really put a lot of pressure on herself and started abusing drugs again.

‘So by the time she got on the plane, she had practically killed herself. They said it was a heart failure but she had taken enough drugs to have a great party.’

Fisher died in 2016 with the autopsy revealing a cocktail of drugs including cocaine, meth, ecstasy, alcohol and opiates found in her system which caused a cardiac arrest on a flight from London to Los Angeles.

I can see why Lourde wouldn't want to talk to people her mom did drugs with. It must be incredibly painful.

That said, friends and family of an addict tend to blame the people the addict did drugs with, and I don't think it's fair, really. The reality is they are hanging around each other because they have the same problem. The addict made the decision to hang with their addict friends and do drugs together.

Many people blame Andy Dick for getting Phil Hartmann's wife back on drugs, but what was she doing hanging around Andy Dick? She knew what Dick was like.
