A theory on why he sold Star Wars

Do you think that maybe he sold it because he felt guilty about how much time people waste on Star Wars? There many people born after 1977 who have lived their entire lives and centered their existence around these movies. Perhaps Lucas felt bad that so many of them have wasted their lives because of a few movies he wanted to make. All he wanted to do was something similar to the Buck Rogers-style serials he enjoyed as a kid. He wasn't planning on people changing their religion to Jedi or spending time and money building Death Star replicas in their backyard. Perhaps that's why he has given so much of his fortune to charity since selling it. Maybe he wants to make up for all the collective centuries of time and millions of dollars wasted by so many.

He should just retired it.
1983 should have been the last film.
I cannot believe how awful these Disney films are. The contract shouldn't have allowed them to touch the original characters and story in any way.

cuz of some of the fanbase there jerks

Honestly out of all the fanboys, (mcu, Star trek, DC, Ninja turtles, Xbox and ps, Beyonce's beehive,) star wars is the worse, they can't accept change.

I don't think Lucas was ever the same after his wife divorced him in 1983. He even said it was the most devastating event ever in his life, worse than his bad car accident in the 60's. Plus, his wife Marcia was the secret sauce to the first two Star Wars movies(by ROTJ I'm sure she had checked out esp. since she was banging the guy who designed their new huge skywalker mansion).
So yeah, ever since 1983 George had lost his right hand woman and never made anything decent except two more Indy Jones flicks with his buddy Spielberg.

He said he sold it because he wanted to realize other movies but then he did nothing so far. Maybe he will do something in future, who knows.

reply

He is old and wanted to leave his kids a nice inheritance.

reply

Had anyone ever offered you 4 BILLION dollars for anything before?

What a ridiculous thread.

Isn't it pretty common knowledge he didn't want anything to do with it anymore? He was upset people didn't gobble up the shit that were the prequels and dared to criticize his seemingly endless tweaks; and outright refusal to release the unaltered versions of the movies.

He continued to be hurt and bitter when he compared Disney to "white slavers" because they didn't want to use his scripts: https://www.businessinsider.com/george-lucas-says-he-sold-star-wars-to-white-slavers-2015-12. Shouldn't have sold the franchise if he wanted to continue writing.

Let's be real, almost all his ideas post Indy trilogy have been criticized and rightly so. He's a bitter old man with bad ideas. He hasn't had a good idea in decades. I mean, listen to this crap:

"To be fair, Lucas has discussed what he wanted to do with episodes seven through nine, and it sounds something like a mix between an episode of The Magic School Bus and Osmosis Jones. It would have involved things called the Whills and explored the microbiotic world of the Star Wars universe. He even admitted in an interview that "a lot of fans would have hated it," like they did Star Wars Episode I.

So yes, it sounds like an awkward situation, but maybe it's for the best. After all, Lucas was responsible for Jar Jar Binks."

Sounds still better than the sequel trilogy we got. At least it sounds interesting and original.

More midichlorians and naming Yoda's species Whills? No, no it does not.

Enjoy your bad remake of the original trilogy buddy

Better reviews from fans and critics alike almost across the board:

The prequels are worse in every way: acting, effects, story, etc - and the reviews prove it.

TPM - 53% and 59% at RT.
AOTC - 65% and 56%
ROTS - 80% and 66%

Avgs. 66% and 60%

TFA - 93% and 86%
TLJ - 90% and 43%
TROS - 51% and 86%

Avgs. 78% and 71%

That's just nonsense. Each of the prequels made a fortune. Naysayers are always the screamers. Everyone else spoke with their wallet.

reply

Reviews and ratings speak to quality, box office totals does not. That just means people went to see something. Even if we were to use your "spoke with their wallet" rationale, the sequels made more: https://www.boxofficemojo.com/chart/top_lifetime_gross/?area=XWW. Rogue One made more than any prequel, LOL.

Movies aren't made for Rotten Tomatoes. They're made for profit. You see, it's a business kind of thing. But generally, if a movie is really that bad, it loses money, rather than making 400 million or so in profits.

Boxofficemojo seems to have dropped their inflation adjusted list a few years ago. That's too bad. It might have cleared things up for people like you who evidently don't know better. LOL
