Top 5 Roles?
Pulp Fiction
Unbreakable
The MCU
Jackie Brown
The Hateful Eight
Jackson's best role, in my opinion, is Lazarus Woods in Black Snake Moan. That's a POWERFUL performance and every inch of it displays Samuel L. Jackon's mastery of his craft.
I'd put Stephen from Django Unchained on the list, too. Stephen was a complex role of a man who was driven to be spiteful because spite was all he knew. The look on his face when Django rides in... that alone puts Stephen on this list because the hatred he feels is not only so palpable, but also so clear: we know exactly what he's feeling - all the bitterness, resentment, and envy - just looking at Django.
Fun, relaxed, and a great radio man: Mr. Senior Love Daddy the DJ in Do the Right Thing is a bit of a different role for Samuel L., but he does it so well. He's very believable as a popular radio host, and that's not easy to pull off.
What list of Jackson's best roles would be complete without Jules Winnfield from Pulp Fiction? This BMF is the epitome of Jackson's super-cool, intense characters that we all know and love. Nick might be Furious, but Winnfield was there first - and with a Jerry curl, no less!
Mr. Glass from Unbreakable is my fifth choice. Jackson's had a LOT of great roles over the years (kills me not to include Marquis (Hateful Eight), Ordell (Jackie Brown), and especially Richmond Valentine (Kingsman) in this list) but Mr. Glass manages to have all the cool and menace Jackson normally brings to a role, while at the same time adding in a lot of pain, vulnerability, and weakness.
If I had a sixth slot, it would go to Richmond Valentine - another blend of "Classic Jackson" with some very nerdy, non-Jackson traits that were fun to see. So, I guess I kinda cheated and did a list of six.
No-one mentioned One Eight Seven????
