I'm not a big fan of Westerns, but my winner is far and away "THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN"!!! With Yul Brynner leading an all-star cast, and one of the greatest film scores ever! I'm still grateful to Kurosawa for letting his work be ripped off!

It's one of those movies that has absolutely everything I like - action, fun, hot guys, wonderful music, amazing settings, and real feeling. And Yul Brynner being as hot as hot can be.

My 10 favorite westerns - not necessarily in any particular order:

(1) The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)
(2) The Great Silence (1968)
(3) Death Rides a Horse (1967)
(4) Django the Bastard/The Stranger's Gundown (1969) - (Supernatural Gothic Western)
(5) High Plains Drifter (1973)
(6) A Reason to Live, A Reason to Die (1972)
(7) Once Upon a Time in the West (1968)
(8) For a few dollars more (1965)
(9) Django (1966)
(10) Kill Them All and Come Back Alone (1968)

Not exactly westerns - but great films and close enough
Westworld (1973)
No Country for Old Men (2007)
El Mariachi (1992)
Desperado (1995)

I have not seen Django the Bastard, but I will search it out soon. I see you have noted it as being a gothic western, which is how I would somewhat describe one I really enjoy called And God Said to Cain. Very nice list and if you have any other recommendations, please post more.

I've never seen And God Said to Cain, I need to check that one out.

Django the Bastard is very similar in premise to High Plains Drifter, there's even talk that Clint might have been "inspired" by it. Drifter is the better film, but Django the Bastard had some cool ideas and atmospheric cinematography going for it.

Thank you for the recommendation. I see it has Rada, Ivan Rassimov’s sister as a lead actress in the cast so I’m excited about that. I will report back after I give it a viewing.

As for And God Said to Cain (1970), it’s an Antonio Margheriti film and a quite good one in my opinion. It’s a simple revenge story with an uncharacteristically subdued Klaus Kenski in the lead, who in this state is perfect for his almost ghostly role. It really has an odd gothic horror feel to it with some memorable scenes and a large supporting cast of genre regulars.

I enjoyed it quite a lot. This is definitely a gothic spaghetti western even down to its soundtrack. I particularly liked the scene where Murdock, played by Luciano Rossi tried to hang Django by rope. That guy is usually seen in minor supporting roles, but here he was very good as the twisted villain. Fun watch.
