The Dark Backward

Near Dark

reply

Near dark is a solid twist on modern vampires. Pretty sure I saw TDB as well, but it’s been ages.

reply

Yes, I love that RV from hell, from the start of the movie.

Toss up between Mumford (1999) and The Vast of Night (2019) - if I had to choose out of these, I'd probably lean toward loving the latter a smidge more. Not sure if they're unpopular, but I've not met any people irl that have heard of either.

reply

Two come to mind. And they both have something to do with time travel.

Predestination (2014) with Ethan Hawke & Sarah Snook

Timecrimes (2007) an excellent Spanish film

reply

Seen and liked both.

Combat Shock (1984)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0090866/

The baby in this film is second only to Henry’s in Eraserhead (1977). Great pick!

I also want to comment on how addictive that 80s synth score is when Frankie wanders around the city. It sticks in my head for days.

Yep, absolutely love that score. Very addictive indeed haha.

“You know, today is one of those days when anything that can go wrong.. does"
That sums it up about right. 😀

The scene that sticks in my head from that film is when he’s in line at the unemployment office and the girl on the motorcycle pulls up with that score blaring. Im alway thinking “dude, you need to get on!”

I wonder if Troma has ever made a film darker than this one.

reply

Great scene 🙂

Yeah.. can't think of a Troma movie that's more darker than this.

All the Colors of the Dark (1972)
Graduation Day (1981)
Turkey Shoot (1982)
The Initiation (1984)
The Visitor (1979)
Emmanuelle and the Last Cannibals (1977)
Murder-Rock: Dancing Death (1984)
Death Walks on High Heels (1971)

Great choices and I’m a big fan of all of the above.

Highlights for me:

The Visitor is so quirky and strange. I did a rewatch the other day and it never gets old. You have to love the bombastic late 70’s score punctuating scenes at strange moments. My only gripe is Shelly Winters being included in the cast, but Franco Nero as the Jesus figure gets an A+ from me.

Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals stands at number two in my Cannibal films ranking. The cast is fabulous, including the smoking monkey. Emanuelle is in top form here, Nude firing a pump 12ga out of a moving boat and her interrogation skills, although unorthodox, are quite pleasant.

I really love Fulci’s Flashdance inspired Murder-Rock. Another tip top cast with Claudio Cassinelli and the beautiful Olga Karlatos, who is such an interesting actress who I wish had been in more films. She’s currently a judge in Bermuda. It’s strange how bloodless a film this is coming off the heels of things like The New York Ripper and House by the Cemetery.

I need to rewatch The Visitor myself. I have an awful (or brilliant) habit of only watching movies when I'm drinking alcohol. Unfortunately sometimes I start blacking out or falling asleep and can barely remember the movies.

The Visitor was so groovy and odd, a fun time (the OST was stellar)... I think I doozed of for 10 minutes near the end in a drunken stupor.

It's why I don't put much faith in my own reviews of movies. People shouldn't listen to a drunk for movie advice.

“habit of only watching movies when I'm drinking”
I know that feeling but my similar situation is from the THC angle.

I hope you do revisit it soon. Who could see this trailer and not be curious about this film? 😀

Hell, I forgot All the Colors of the Dark (1972) Is an 8/10 for me also.

reply

LMAO...I HAVEN'T SEEN A MOVIE WITHOUT THC IN LIKE 25 YEARS.

reply

If you watched the above trailer while high, I know your seeking the film out right about now. 😀

reply

As a fairly grizzled horror fan, Never Take Sweets… really churned my stomach. It’s a very realistic depiction of paedophilia for its time.
