Songs Disliked/Hated By Actual Fans of the Band

You know, a fan likes or loves every song of a group (maybe during a period - original or classic line-up), except for one.

Just my observations..

Led Zeppelin - D'yer M'aker
Chicago - If You Leave Me Now

I actually like both, not love, though. I'd say the latter song is more disliked by the fans, though.

Does anyone actually like "Start Me Up" by The Rolling Stones? Personally I hate it and don't know any Stones fans that does.

reply

Not a fan of that song. They have worse songs, especially from the later-80s onward, but it's not a good song.

reply

I like it

reply

Did Mick pay you?

I think this is good.

reply

I don't know what it is, but I find it annoying.

reply

I love the Stones, but not that song, but it's better than "Shattered"!

reply

I love it, a great intro.

reply

Bill Gates liked it.

yellow submarine - the beatles

reply

😱

You don't like Yellow Submarine?

Me, I can't even listen to Revolution #9.

reply

I was going to say Revolution #9. I'm just glad they stuck that one at the end of the album.

reply

i don't think any of the ex beatles ever played this except ringo.

reply

I love "Yellow Submarine"! Both the song and the psychedelic movie!

And yeah. I'm a fan. And agree with "Revolution #9", I've been skipping over that self-indulgent mess for decades.

reply

A few Grateful Dead songs written in the latter part of their career - Easy Answers, Days Between, to name two.

reply

I daresay "So Many Roads" is the only good one out of the whole batch that would have been on the album that wasn't...

reply

I will confess to liking "Corrina"

Do fans hate Lakeside Park? Think Geddy Lee hated it.

reply

Lakeside Park is great and seems to have a good reputation among the fans I know (which is a few thousand from Rush Facebook groups). What Geddy hated about it was his vocals. He claims that he hates his vocals on the first three albums.

I remember reading that a lot of longtime Nirvana fans hated "Smells Like Teen Spirit," because they felt like the band sold out. Personally, I love it...I think it's by far their best song and the quintessential 90s song. I still crank it up whenever I hear it on the radio, over 30 years later.

reply

I was gonna mention that song when I read the title! I think the actual band dislikes that song.

reply

"Smells Like Teen Spirit" was the song which propelled Nirvana to chart success. How could that be a "sell out" song unless their fans thought they sold out when they got a recording contract? It's too early in their career for a "sell out".

I hate that "Rape me" song. Annoying.

reply

From what I understand, there were a lot of Nirvana fans that were mad that they became famous. They wanted to keep Nirvana as their "own little secret," I guess.

If you listen to their music before "Nevermind," (I've heard a little bit of it, but not a lot), it's a lot "rawer" and "unpolished" than what "Nevermind" was. Personally, I much prefer "Nevermind" and everything that came after it. I think "Smells Like Teen Spirit" is an amazing song...the long-time Nirvana fans would probably use that as evidence as to why they dislike the song so much! 😃

I never really cared for "Rape Me" either.

reply

Okay. Interesting as well that both Foo Fighters and Hole are more-or-less spinoff bands from Nirvana.

reply

Yes...I have no proof of this, but I have always thought that "Big Me" by the Foo Fighters and "Doll Parts" by Hole were both "Kurt Cobain songs." They both sound very "Cobain-ish," IMO.

reply

What, you want fingerprints? You said it yourself. Cobain-ish. Grohl from Nirvana led Foo Fighters. We all know where Courtney Love came from.

reply

I saw an interview recently with Butch Vig, who produced "Nevermind". He said that Kurt thought the production was too slick and didnt want to double-track his vocal performances. Butch won him over by telling him "John Lennon double-tracked his vocals".

reply

Interesting! Butch Vig did a fantastic job on "Nevermind," IMO.

reply

I agree. He is a great producer.

reply

I remember the first time I heard that title I was thinking “Like in the TV commercial?”. There was a commercial at that time for a body deodorant targeted at teenage girls called Teen Spirit and the tagline at the end of the commercial was “Smells like teen spirit”.

reply

That's where the name came from. If I am remembering correctly, and if the story has any truth to it, someone told Kurt that he smelled like teen spirit, as that was the deodorant his girlfriend wore, but Kurt didn't know what it was and thought it sounded rebellious.

reply

I love ABBA but I can't stand Dancing Queen.

reply

I'm Bowie's biggest fan but I hate a bunch of his 80's stuff. "Let's Dance" makes me cringe. And "Under Pressure" with Freddie Mercury is the worst.

reply

Bowie is in my Top 5 solo. Love Bowie. Music and Interviews. Witty. But, I admit I always skip over "Let's Dance". But if "Lady Grinning Soul" and "Lady Stardust" came on every single day randomly on Winamp, I'd never skip them.

reply

All Bowie albums from Scary Monsters and before is pure gold for me. Beginning with Lets Dance in 1983 he was trying to break into the American Top 40 and he watered down his style. But yes, Ziggy Stardust is epic.

reply

Bowie went from being rather edgy and experimental to very mainstream pop. I don't mind his 80's stuff but it is more like background music then something I would purposely seek out and listen to.

reply

Agreed. For example, "China Girl" is a pleasant song. But it's soft rock filler, not Ziggy.

reply

Another good one from that era is Putting Out Fire (With Gasoline).

reply

Yeah, I guess he did do some good stuff in the 80's. Lol. "Jazzin' for Blue Jean" is another one.

This discussion made me nostalgic so I looked up the clip for "Let's Dance", it was a big thing back in the day because it was filmed in Australia, this was before Crocodile Dundee. Anyway, the clip is horrendous and the song is just ok.

owner of a lonely heart by yes.

Another example of a unique band chasing chart success.
