reply

that album i listed is worth a listen, instrumental magic

reply

Melvins have 2 drummers.

reply

Is no one going to mention Emerson, Lake and Palmer?

btw, ELP thought about asking Jimi Hendrix to join their band, but didn't because it would change them to HELP.

reply

I've been an ELP fan since the 1970s

Neil Young & YELP. Listen to a tune and find a good restaurant all at once

reply

Yes, they really are fascinating.
Lately I've listened to a guy on YT break down Tarkus, as well as some other works.
As a kid I really couldn't wrap my head around Tarkus (or the later Toccata) and I never tried to revisit them.
Now my listening appreciation is more sophisticated and hearing these songs (with a little help from the host,)
gives them a whole new life for me.

As much as I enjoy the compositions and chops of the band Yes, ELP were more daring and audacious, for better or worse.
Hearing Emerson's maniacal, single-minded devotion to utilizing his keyboards is astounding.

The Supremes

reply

Good one.
Everyone knows (or should) them, but they seem a little under appreciated.
Other Motown artists evolved more with the changes society was under going, but as sheer money makers, I think the Supremes practically built Motown in the early days.

reply

I was being a bit snide because they're not a band. I mean I can't imagine Diana Ross with an electric guitar, Flo on bass, and Mary on drums.

But yeah, I've always loved The Supremes.

reply

I'll add

ZZ Top (edit: looks like shogun beat me to it)

reply

Grand Funk Railroad

reply

I always loved I'm Your Captain/Closer to Home. It never got a lot of radio play because of the length. Great classic rock.

Same here. I owned all of their albums when I was younger. This was my favorite, known as, "The Red Album" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rbW4YZFfl7w My band and I performed several of their earliest hits.

reply

Dang, that's a toughie. Hard to say the Hendrix Experience is not the correct answer. Of course, imo:

Bill Evans Trio (w/Paul Motian and Scott LaFaro, specifically)
Minutemen
NoMeansNo
The Peddlers

reply

The Minutemen and NoMeansNo. Hell yes! fIREHOSE fits in there too and don't forget the Huskers.

reply

Haha the only reason I didn't pay my respects to Ed fROMOHIO is because in my mind they're basically the same band. Minutemen were already heading in that direction before D. died, RIP. And for reasons unknown, I appreciate Hüsker Dü's talent and influence, but I never fell in love with them.
