Common sense. Good sense stopped being common a LOOOOOONG time ago. Let us instead praise “good sense,” which is a rarity.

A couple more:

“To decimate” ONLY means “to reduce by one-tenth.” It categorically does not mean “to obliterate” or “to destroy completely.” The Roman Army used decimation to punish their legions who displeased them. Soldiers would draw stones, one-tenth of which were white, and those guys died. Remember that: decimate is ONLY a 10 percent reduction.

Not a common misuse, but related to the above: “to tithe” means “to donate one-tenth of one’s income to something,” most commonly to one’s place of worship or to a charity, but it could also be to one’s tailor, haberdasher, bookie, favorite bar, drug dealer or mistress. The notion of a measure of one-tenth is under-recognized in our vernacular language.

Speaking of the vernacular, the common usage, there is no reason at all for the phrase “try and,” as in, “try and be witty” or “try and get laid in Mom’s basement where you lurk online.” Use “try TO.” It’s a much more active voice in terms of diction. “Try and” has defeat presupposed in it. “Try TO” is dynamic. Of course, the best thing would be never to use the word “try” at all, because there is only “do” or “not to do.”

"Unprecedented" came into common usage because of the news reports during the COVID-19 pandemic. Now people overuse it, like a kid with a new toy. "Mommy, listen! I learned a big word!"

reply

“Unprecedented” is a perfectly useful and precise word. It means “there has been nothing that is like this before.” What’s your problem with it?

Here is a word that is almost always misused: “incredible.” It means “not credible,” a polite way of saying “that is bullshit.” It DOES NOT MEAN “amazing.” It means “unbelievable” in a bad way, in a way that is ignorant at best, or a deliberate lie at worst. Do not even try to tell me that popular usage has altered its meaning. I will never acceed to ignorance.

And let me get this off my chest, fans of sports that involve some kind of ball and have fat guys on TV commenting on them: “defense” is pronounced “de-FENS.” “Offense is pronounced “off-ENS.” Period. Exclamation point. I acknowledge that most jocks sneer at education. Why? Because you can’t acquire it?

reply

Yeah the misuse of 'incredible' really chaps my ass.

Particularly when it's blatantly overused (which is all the f'ing time) by people in the news and sports media. People who are supposed to have a good grasp on wording. What, you can't come up with ANY other adjectives? You have to constantly go with that inaccurate one time and time again?

"She's just beaten her personal best! That's incredible!". No it isn't. I believed it instantly. Why wouldn't I? Perhaps 'impressive' is the word you were looking for.

"Incredible footage of the baby panda in the wild". No it isn't. I can see it right there and I'm perfectly comfortable with it.

I wish people would stop referring to their bellies/lower abdomen as their 'stomach'.

Example I just heard, the last straw before posting here; "You can see the baby kicking in her stomach!"....If your baby is in your stomach, please consult a doctor immediately.

For me it's right up there with 'nucular'.

The constant use of the phrase "going forward" by bosses/manager/authority figures when talking to subordinates, etc. Not just once, but several times.

It just irritates me to no end!👿👿👿

This one, and starting sentences with "So".
