What are some films that you enjoyed WAY more than you thought you would?

Like you went in with low expectations or you didn't even know what to expect. Here are a few of mine;

1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) - Yeah, I never cared for Cap. But this film just elevated his character for me. Still my favorite film in the entire MCU.

2. Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) - Another Superhero flick. Never read any of their comics. I had no idea what to expect from it. It absolutely blew me away.

3. Sicario (2015) - Saw some previews for it & I thought it looked pretty meh. Couldn't tell what the hype was all about. Watched it, then I found out. It deserves all the hype & praise. Absolutely fantastic film

4. Jackie Brown (1997) - This is probably the only time I went into a Tarantino film without knowing much about the film. The end results was just wow. Enjoyed it waaay more than I thought I would. It's my second favorite film of his. After Pulp Fiction.

5. Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (2011) - I never cared about the Mission Impossible franchise THAT much before this one. I could take it or leave it. Then this came along & just blew me away. It's still my favorite one in the franchise

6. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005) - Another one I didn't know anything about. Had an absolute blast with this one!

7. Memento (2001) - I somehow never heard of this movie. And then I just caught it on tv one day. Still my absolute favorite Nolan film

8. Hot Fuzz (2007) - This was my introduction to Edgar Wright & Simon Pegg. The promo I saw for it made it look so dumb but the film was absolutely brilliant.

The first movie that came to mind when I read your post was the first Wonder Woman movie from a couple of years ago. I wasn't expecting much and I really didn't think that I would like it all that much but I did.

Almost a great movie.

I liked that one. At least until that final battle. That was so meh compared to the rest of the film.

LOL

I almost mentioned that.

How many battles have you seen where two beings are fighting each other with CGI balls of light. It gets old.

Haven't seen the second WW movie yet.

Right? Or just fighting a person with the exact same set of powers or skill. There are a lot of superhero content that's genuinely good but is ruined by that final act because THAT has to happen. Like every freaking time.

Like the recent WandaVision for example. It tried something new, unique & original. At least in the Superhero genre. Then the final episode just turned into THAT. Two superpowered beings throwing balls of energy at each other

P.S You're really not missing out much on Wonder Woman '84. It was abysmal. Makes the first one look like a masterpiece.

Some movies I saw this year that I enjoyed a lot

Bloody Hell (2020)
The FP (2011)
FP2: Beats of Rage (2018)
Versus (2000)

I agree with Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. I had no expectations at all when I first sat down to watch it and was pretty much blown away. (And also developed a major Michelle Monaghan crush. I'm probably the only MC member who owns the "Made of Honor" blu-ray.)

I was not much of a Gerard Butler fan and thought I’d be out of this in 10 minutes. Boy was I wrong. Loved this film. Have rewatched it many times.

As a kid I hated Driving Miss Daisy but now I like it.

…Memento is a movie that I watched again for the second time just quite recently…the first time was many years ago and there was quite a bit that I’d forgotten…such a great movie but this time I watched it in real time straight after the actual movie and that completely changes the movie and the watch if it…I would thoroughly recommend watching the real time version if you haven’t already…

- Repo Man ( 1984 ) - Saw it when it first came out. Liked it and was not surprised it became a cult classic.

- Clerks ( 1994 ) - Loved loved loved the snappy dialog.

- Sideways ( 2004 ) - Like others have noted, a surprise favorite. I really got pulled into the story even though I'm not into wine or golf and even though the characters were kind of pathetic.

- Rear Window ( 1954 ) - Was expecting it to be dry and kind of boring, but was pulled in by the great details, situations, great acting and dialog. The suspense was just the icing on the cake.

- Cedar Rapids ( 2011 ) - When I saw that Ed Helms was the lead I thought it was going to be a cheesy goofy farce. Turned out this was a great dramedy with cool lines and great acting from the various characters.
