What are some films that you enjoyed WAY more than you thought you would?

Like you went in with low expectations or you didn't even know what to expect. Here are a few of mine;

1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014) - Yeah, I never cared for Cap. But this film just elevated his character for me. Still my favorite film in the entire MCU.

2. Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) - Another Superhero flick. Never read any of their comics. I had no idea what to expect from it. It absolutely blew me away.

3. Sicario (2015) - Saw some previews for it & I thought it looked pretty meh. Couldn't tell what the hype was all about. Watched it, then I found out. It deserves all the hype & praise. Absolutely fantastic film

4. Jackie Brown (1997) - This is probably the only time I went into a Tarantino film without knowing much about the film. The end results was just wow. Enjoyed it waaay more than I thought I would. It's my second favorite film of his. After Pulp Fiction.

5. Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol (2011) - I never cared about the Mission Impossible franchise THAT much before this one. I could take it or leave it. Then this came along & just blew me away. It's still my favorite one in the franchise

6. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005) - Another one I didn't know anything about. Had an absolute blast with this one!

7. Memento (2001) - I somehow never heard of this movie. And then I just caught it on tv one day. Still my absolute favorite Nolan film

8. Hot Fuzz (2007) - This was my introduction to Edgar Wright & Simon Pegg. The promo I saw for it made it look so dumb but the film was absolutely brilliant.

Death Wish 1974, and Midnight Cowboy 1969, are the two recent ones I thought I'd hate, but loved.

In Order of Disappearance (2014). I saw it last week and I thought it was going to be a typical revenge movie, but there were a lot of comedic elements in it.

reply

Just looked it up & I saw the American remake of that one. With Liam Neeson. Didn't care for it that much.

I'll check out the original. Hopefully, it's better. I like revenge flicks.

reply

I didn't even know that was a remake. I just thought it was a Liam Neeson snow revenge movie.

Off the top of my head, the first one I thought of was 'Sideways.' I was in my early 20's when that came out, and a movie about two "old guys" farting around in wine country didn't interest me at all. Plus I only knew of Paul Giamatti as Howard Stern's asshole boss at that point, and Tom Church as "that guy from Wings."

But when I actually got forced into watching it, I loved the hell out of it.

reply

Same! I was like, I don't know anything about wine or wine talk, why would I bother with this film? I'm glad I bothered with it. Enjoyed it so much

Elf (2003). I had heard of the movie and thought "okay, some guy thinks he's an elf... big deal." I don't know how many times I walked past the DVD on a store shelf and thought "meh." Someone gave a family member a copy of this and I finally got around to watching it. It was one of those so stupid it's funny films that has become a yearly Christmas viewing tradition. Plus Zooey Deschanel was adorably cute!

reply

You reminded me of another Will Ferrell movie that fits this category - Stranger Than Fiction (2006)

reply

I haven't seen that one yet. Thanks for the suggestion!

reply

Just fyi - it's not a comedy, unlike 99% of his movies.

reply

This! I checked it cause the premise sounded awesome but I did not expect it to enjoy it as much as I did. Still my favorite Ferrell film

reply

I had a celebrity crush on Zooey Deschanel for a little while when I was a teenager because of that movie.

reply

She was downright adorable in this movie.

reply

Galaxy Quest (1999) - I was basically forced to watch it. Turned out to be one of my all-time favorites.

reply

Rewatched it a year or so ago and it was WAY better than I remembered. LOL. Weird when that happens.

Great flick though.

Magnolia
The Trial of the Chicago 7
If Beale Street Could Talk
Kingsman: The Golden Circle
Meet Joe Black
Scoop
Crash (1996)
You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger
Meet Dave
The House Bunny

reply

I didn't care for the The Golden Circle but the first Kingsman, definitely. My little siblings would not shut up about it. They got the DVD so I checked it out. Such a wonderful film.

I think if I didn't have such high expectations for the sequel, I would've enjoyed it.

reply

the house bunny is a legitimately funny, cool little movie.

reply

Oh my god, did you just list The House Bunny...I just watched that for the first time last week. So bad, So good. Love it.

reply

Dawn of the Dead remake. The opening sequence was one of the best I'd ever seen in a horror movie, second only to the Exorcist, maybe. The rest of the movie didn't live up to that, but it was still pretty good.

reply

Dawn is the best horror remake I've seen, it might have exceeded the original

10/10 perfect balance of terror, humor and gore

reply

Quite a few in my time but most recently, Cruella.

reply

Jungle Book for me. I don't really care for Disney's live action remakes but that one genuinely surprised me. My little siblings & really loved it

reply

Yeah I’ve avoided most of the Disney live action remakes. I saw Beauty and the Beast which bored me silly and I had no interest in seeing Aladdin without Robin Williams or The Lion King because it’s my favourite animated film and I generally don’t watch remakes of my favourites.
