Not a bad list. I'd also add "The Invisible Man". (1933)

reply

It's been a long while since I have seen that one. I don't remember it well enough to rank it.

reply

Dang, beat me to it, I was gonna ask where The Invisible Man was on Allaby’s list. I love that movie.

Island of Lost Souls (32)

reply

Yeah, that's a good one too.

THE BLACK CAT (1934)

reply

I have that one on blu ray. I thought it was alright, but not great.

reply

I adore The Black Cat. It's beautifully shot and just off the walls crazy in its plotting. Plus it was the only collaboration in which Karloff and Lugosi seemed to get equal development and focus. The Raven is pretty much the Lugosi show and everything else after that only bothers with Karloff. Here, they get to truly square off and it is such a delight.

Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931)

would "M" count?

reply

Personally I don’t consider M a horror film. It’s a great film and there are some elements to it that could be considered horror though.

reply

Yeah - all the horrors I like are 'realistic thrillers' like "The Collector" (1965)

I would consider "M" mostly a thriller, and probably the best, a 10/10... I've seen others consider it a noir. It's not a genre movie, and its one I've been wanting to re-watch.

The Most Dangerous Game (1932). It's exciting, well-paced, and lean, with some haunting images (the severed head in the jar, for one) and wonderful editing. Leslie Banks also plays one of my favorite movie villains of all time.

I’ve never seen Freaks but I was under the impression that it was more a movie on how people on the fringes of society were taken advantage of rather than a horror movie. Isn’t it about some attractive actress/model taking advantage of a small man?

reply

Freaks is one of those films that could be considered either a horror film or a drama. It definitely touches upon the subject of how the outcasts of society are treated. There are some horror elements to it and I think it works really well as a horror film. Freaks is definitely a must see, regardless of if you want to classify it as more of a drama or as a horror film.
