50 years ago a man could support his wife and kids. What changed?

Man goes to work, wife looks after home and kids, sometimes 4+ kids, and the man had job security.

Now society is dog eat dog with no job security and all having to work and have smaller families.

Was this planned or just how things worked out due to population growth?

Overtaxing large companies forced them to move high paying assembly jobs to other countries.

reply

It wasn't tax, they wanted to break the labor unions that kept salaries high enough that a factory worker could support a spouse and kids. And they did.

reply

If you are really in support of the crooked labor unions and don't see how they are responsible for so much of our economic downfall, then there is zero chance that you'll acknowledge that high taxes in Democrat cities have contributed to industries moving away.

reply

Ah yes, turning all manufacture over to 10 year olds in China is so much better for society than labor unions!

For all their ills, yes, labor unions kept wages for working people high enough that regular Joes could support a wife and kids. You must be so very happy, now that only professionals can afford one parent at home.

reply

Yes, people that contribute more to society than a 10th grade education should make much more than forced wages from corrupt union leaders. People in those jobs now can absolutely support a family, they just need to moderate their spending have a more realistic lifestyle. Not every career should, or can, provide a nice house and a new car. If you've stopped your education in line with the lowest working class, expect to live accordingly.

reply

everyday prices increased, salaries stayed the same.
average joe is pretty screwed.

that's about it.

There’s a lot of opportunity now in areas that before did not exist. Years ago you wanted to make a movie you had to go through the studio system. Now you can just upload some files you made on your phone to YouTube.

reply

woman were not competing for work as well, so the loans had to be higher (smaller workforce)

reply

Because 50 years ago, a man was in the picture 🤣

In all seriousness, I think one of the things that's causing this dynamic modern household shift is because women normally work now, so it's difficult for a family to stay together when the husband and wife both have careers that may affect their relationship.

a little additional perspective.

i just found this neat little doc - i believe it's federal gov't housing report based on the 1960 census.

https://www2.census.gov/library/publications/decennial/1960/housing-volume-1/41962442v1p1ch01.pdf

if you look on page 21, you'll see a table showing the following:

of 53 million housing units:

46 million had no air conditioning
13.9 million had no washing machine
17.4 million were using a hand-wringer to wash and dry clothes.
43 million did not have a freezer. apparently in 1960 it was not standard for fridges to come with built-in freezers.
11 million had no phone.

reply

People were still stuck in the past.
