If you ever been to a buffet...

...do you stack up your first plate with meats (and maybe a starch)?

That's what I do. I go for the meats.

reply

I rarely go to a buffet, usually just at dinner theatre. I will almost always start with a salad plate before I go for my mains, but I have never just done meats. I want to be comfortable for the rest of the night.

Casino: Prime rib (rare cut) with mashed potatoes, creamed spinach, and sauteed mushrooms. 2nd plate whatever looks cool like lasagna, pork loin, rice pilaf, etc. 3rd plate like the first.

Chinese buffet: Whatever plain fish fillet they have with rice, "asian greens" (?), and pot stickers. After that I go crazy with jalapeno pickled squid, coconut shrimp, and assorted chicken dishes.

Cajun buffet: Fried catfish, collard greens /w pepper vinegar, fried okra. 2nd plate jambalaya, fried chicken and/or ribs, bacon lima beans. 3rd + crawfish etouffee, seafood gumbo, creole shrimp, dirty rice EDIT: how could I forget the black eyed peas!

I never go for any shellfish that I have to shell myself. Screw that. What other chef-prep tasks do they think they can pass on to me?

(I only ever grabbed "all meat" at a place in Frankfurt Germany and a Brazillian churraskaria joint here in the US. A+and D grade respectively)

We have a couple Indian restaurants that have excellent lunch buffets. I go for the chicken tikka masala and/or the curry chicken every time. Very yummy.

reply

I LOVE Indian food (chicken tikka masala being a favorite) but I find the Indian buffets to be too bland. They cater to a western palette and ease off the spice way too much. It took us asking for "super spicy" a few times for our local Indian restaurant to get the idea and start making it like THEY like for us. Very spicy but also much more flavorful. We noticed that the restaurant started getting much more popular after that breakthrough with us. We wonder if they changed their entire approach.

How do you feel about chutney?

reply

Yah, here too they mostly lay off the spice in the Indian buffet food, but there are exceptions here and there. I know what chutney is but never really familiarized myself with them, even after all these years.

Man, I want some Indian food right now!

reply

I like to have a dollop of it on the side of the plate. Get just at tiny bit of it on your fork before each bite. Mango chutney is everywhere and is damn good. But there are many other great chutneys. Some aren't even jelly-like. Coriander chutney, for instance, is also very good but more of a paste.

I want to go to the Casino buffet with YOU! I'll watch your purse while I wait at the table and you just bring me back whatever you're getting - except I prefer the end cut of the prime rib.

For dessert, bring me everything on the shelf that looks like a fresh strawberry, a chocolate-covered one preferably - don't bring the defrosted glazed shit - and also get about six cream puffs. I'll pick out the strawberries and toss everything else and stuff them in my cream puffs.

reply

Instead, how about I take YOUR purse and drop a deuce in it for you later on when I come out to you waiting in the car for me. And keep the air conditioner running or I'll have to slap you around again.

reply

Let's just skip the buffet and head on over to my "Clown Suite" at Circus Circus. It's got a mirror on the ceiling above the bed that's never been cleaned.

LOL

reply

I'm veggie, but yes to the starch. Anything potato or bread related goes straight on my plate.

..... not so sure about buffets these days though 😕

How do you ask Warren if he wants to go to a buffet?

Buffet, Buffet?

reply

Jimmy, too.

I used to like breakfast buffets and high end brunch buffets. Shrimp, shrimp and more shrimp was the goal. Also the desserts and chocolate fountains were gut busting delicious. After COVID and the hyper-sterilized take out boxes, etc buffets seem kind of disgusting. I did catch Hep A from a nasty roadside buffet once. Late drive back from ski country, only food for miles. Wished I chose the starvation option.
