How is this even a question?

reply

Sorry, I can’t take this seriously.

reply

I don't think he meant it as serious but it is...Things are getting worse, when I have to see young families begging for help on my street corner...and I live in a nice area. Joblessness and homeless are serious, especially after Covid.

reply

I started my own upwork business rather than a toxic workplace

I have an understanding of being homeless. When I finished college and moved back to the Bay Area, still the most expensive place in the country to live in, I had to sleep in my car for about a week before I could find a room for rent in the area. It was scary and brutal, though I was in no danger and actually slept really well ... but I had money in the bank and a degree and experience. So, I have a real understanding of what others feel and go through.

I think the government owes its citizens help, not just morally because it is the right things to do, but financially it is cheaper and more productive than having to police or remediate people which after a certain point is very expensive especially if they turn criminal.

reply

Oh, shitty work environment, easily. In that case you only have to suffer through the annoyance and indignity of it temporarily, as you search for another gig. Once you find one then you can quit, and move on to greener pastures.

If you're actually living on the streets with nothing, in squalor, it becomes extremely hard to fight that downward spiral, dig yourself out of that hole and achieve even the most basic level of gainful employment, let alone obtain a stable residency. Not to mention that you might get stabbed, robbed or raped at any time. And the constant misery and hopelessness of your situation makes you extremely vulnerable to alcoholism and drug addiction, which is rampant on the streets all around you and makes your situation even harder to overcome.

Seriously, how is this even a question? Who in their right mind would EVER chose vagrancy over a bad job? If I had to shovel shit for a living to feed myself and live safely under a roof, I'd be thankful for it.

reply

Actually, some people have always chosen to become vagabonds and prostitutes rather than "shoveling shit".
They chose to have a tiny bit of freedom instead of working hard and only be dirt poor anyway.

reply

Yes, and they're very foolish. No matter how little you make working, at least you have a steady income, and can provide the basic necessities, reliably for yourself. You don't have to sell your ass or your mouth or your vagina in order to not starve. And you still have more than a "tiny bit of freedom," because you don't HAVE to keep that job. Find another one and improve your station in life.

reply

Right, that is how many people feel.
But for these people, it is preferable to take a different route in life.

reply

Neither one.

😎

reply

That is what I think too.

reply

Right on.

I take it you’ve never been homeless Eric?

Take it from someone who WAS working full time and also found themselves temporarily homeless, the fact that you don’t have a roof over your head is by far one of the greatest stresses you’ll ever experience. I pray you never have to go through it yourself.
