What do you think of "white saviour" movies?

I just watched Instant Family, about a white couple who gives 3 Latino children a dream life with storybook house at the end.

I couldn't imagine how offensive these stories are to people of colour who are told by Hollywood that they need rescuing.

I get huge cultural cringe watching these movies, even if they are loosely based on true events.

People of color have been told that they need special guidance/circumstances from both in and outside their trusted communities. It seems that how the message is received has more to do with the messenger than the message.

That's what's offensive. Or at least should be.

Were the children from a orphanage?

Many children around the world have no parents, often abandoned because the original parents cannot afford them.

This hits minority communities hard, and third world countries even more so.

The outlook for the vast majority of these kids without parental guidance is bleak. Sexual abuse, drug addiction and/or gang recruitment is on their life path.

While you describe the show as 'white savior' and culturaly insensitive. The fact is that Mexican and African American families just don't use adoption agencies.

If the show highlights adoption, then it is a good thing in the end.

Some people have called "The help" a white savior movie, but I don't agree with that.
Because it showed that Skeeter had her own problems, despite being the daughter of a priviledged white family.

What about Diff'rent Strokes

I had too much of a crush on Dana Plato to care. But looking back...

White Saviour or not those kids won the lotto. If it weren't for Drummond adopting them they would have been stuck in the ghetto.

Dana Plato was hot I agree.

reply

They are not offensive at all to people with common sense.
