[EDIT] Thanks everyone - over 200 suggestions for child friendly films.

Since lockdown started my daughter (nearly 6) and I have waded through: -
8 Harry Potter films
3 Narnia films
3 Wizard of Oz films
2 Mary Poppins films
Bedknobs and Broomsticks
Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Plus, countless Disney cartoons

Any suggestions? Thanks everyone.

If your girl was a little bit older I would've recommended the Dutch movie Minoes (2001). It's very cute.

How about The Goonies or The Neverending Story? Or are those too scary?

Maybe Hocus Pocus, Casper or the original Jumanji?

reply

All great suggestions: -
The Neverending Story would be perfect.
This is a great start (Iโ€™ll make a list) ๐Ÿ‘

reply

If she likes the movie (Neverending Story), get her the book asap. It's one of the best fantasy books you could give a kid.

reply

We are watching it right now - fingers crossed ๐Ÿคž

reply

Michael Ende is very easy to read. I loved both the Neverending Story and Momo when I was a kid.

reply

Just watched Never Ending Story - she loved it. Perfect suggestion!

reply

Yay! One of my childhood favourites as well. Glad you two had fun.๐Ÿ˜Š

I always liked Honey, I Shrunk the Kids as well. Oops, I'm obviously showing my age here.โ˜บ๏ธ

reply

Maximum dad points earned , thanks.

reply

Casper is actually underrated.

reply

My suggestion is get disney+ for 10 bucks, give her the remote and let it rip.

reply

Once weโ€™ve exhausted everything available on Sky and Netflix, Disney+ will be next.

reply

Unless the library has changed from a few months ago, I thought Disney+ to be over-priced. Compared to Netflix and the others they had a weak lineup. Same old stuff you have already seen recently and none of the old 1960 and 70's movie of the week stuff, the good stuff from our youth. They also didn't have all the classic cartoons. What's up with that.
If you go Youtube there is a remastered 1939 "Gulliver's Travels" that looks great. If she likes the fantasy stories she may like that. Just type in Gulliver's Travels and it should be the first option to pop up.
Or
Lady and the Tramp
Charlotte's Web
Rikki Tikki Tavi
The Secret of Nimh
Savannah Smiles, now this one might not be for 6 year olds, depends how she understands things, but it's damn good.
The Apple Dumpling Gang
The Dark Crystal
The Muppets, movies or tv series
Annie, I prefer the 1982
Heck she might even relate to Laura on "Little House on the Prairie" lots of hours there.
The Sound of Music
The Witch Mountain movies
Babe pig movies
Nim's Island
A Dolphin's Tale
Save Willy
Fly Away Home
My Girl
Hoot
Enchanted, there is a scary dragon witch scene towards the end, not sure how she takes to that.
The Parent Trap , the newer version is probably better. My nieces watched it once with me and then like 20 times in the next few weeks their parents told me. They were hooked and just the same age as your daughter, maybe a few years older.
I did find this on Youtube as well. It's and old Wonderful World of Disney movie. 1969 Secrets of the Pirates Inn.
E.T.
Milo and Otis
you mentioned in another post she likes dancing and that sort, she might like "The Greatest Showman" Lots of songs in that one and their's two young girls as the Hugh's daughters.
And don't forget all the Herbie movies.
Fox and the Hound
I Carly and Hanna Montana would probably take up many hours as well. My nieces glued to tv for those back in the day.
The Rescuers and Rescuers Down Under

also for you, if you have yet to see

Die Hard, I'm sure you've seen it, if not, what are you waiting for?
Midnight Run, this is one of my favorite movies EVER, if you have not seen it, do not get spoiled by a spoiler review, just watch it.
The Right Stuff, about the race to the moon.
do so

Enjoy your day

Sheโ€™s probably only seen maybe 5 on your list - some great picks there, thanks.

A few movies I loved as a kid
Blackbeard's Ghost (1968) - I couldn't stop laughing. It's hilarious, and absolutely family friendly.
Escape to Witch Mountain (1975) - It's more like adventures with a bit of scifi, but very kid-oriented. Loved it.
The Cat from Outer Space (1978) - Another scifi very kid-oriented. The cat was cute as hell.
Pete's Dragon (1977) - The original, one. It's a classic. Period.
Seven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954) It's not a kid's movie, but I loved the dance scenes.
The Witches (1990) - It's more kid oriented than Hocus Pocus, and it's just as good.

reply

Blackbeard's Ghost (1968) - Fond memories of this one. Gotta love Peter Ustinov.

reply

Yeap, Peter Ustinov was absolutely brilliant in that movie as Blackbeard. Years later Johny Depp cloned the character to create Jack Sparrow, and Depp was brilliant too, but Jack Sparrow is basically Ustinov's Blackbeard with eyeliner.

reply

The Witches is too scary for a 6 year old imo.

reply

Iโ€™ll bear that in mind, thanks.

reply

Ok, I agree, it's definitely a kids movie, but it has a few scenes that could be a bit scary at that early age.

reply

Great picks - she loves musicals, so Seven Brides may go down well, thanks.

reply

Two Danny Kaye films ...
Hans Christian Andersen
The Court Jester

reply

Yes! I saw both as a kid - thanks for the reminder.

reply

My pleasure. Glad I could help.

Btw, I own both films on DVD and whenever I need my spirits raised, I put on The Court Jester.
Cracks me up every time.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is way after my childhood--is it still a thing? I remember my friend's 5-year-old really liked it back in the 1990s

Those Magnificent Men in Their Flying Machines (1965) - I think better than Chitty Chitty Bang Bang
Miracle on 34th Street (1947)
Yellow Submarine (1968)
The Princess Bride (1987)
Babe (1995)
My Fair Lady (1964)
The Phantom Tollbooth (1970)
Whale Rider (2002)
Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey (1993)

reply

All good, thanks for the suggestions.

reply

The Dark Crystal (82)
It's a fantasy with puppets made by Frank Oz and Jim Henson

reply

Yes! This is right up her street, thanks.

reply

Robot in the Family (1993)
Gooby (2009)

Both are heartwarming family-friendly romps that will have the little ones entertained for years to come.

reply

I havenโ€™t seen either - Iโ€™ll add them to the list, thanks.
