Did imdb have a discussion board?
If it did,I wasn't aware.
shareThe IMDb had the greatest, most extensive discussion boards with by far the largest number of participants the world has ever known !
Way too much trolling though. Lots of nonsense to have to wade through to actually find posts of substance.

Indeed. Sadly, "several years" is a long time.
I do remember when it was good. I definitely had some good conversations on there with people.
It's a shame that there are assholes in the world who, for some reason, feel it's a good time to just be a nuisance and to try to disrupt things. I will never understand it. But sadly they pretty much took over the message boards, to the point to where it was like a 4:1 troll-to-thoughtful-poster ratio. And hell, even half the people who were trying to be productive posters didn't have much that was interesting to say.
MovieChat is pretty good at the moment when it comes to being mostly troll-free, but the flip-side is that traffic here is relatively light.
I had a great time on the message boards.
There was a group of us that would watch the L&HH shows and just cut up.
When I found out about this site the first thing I did was read up on old post.
I don't think that message boards need to be we all agree on a show,
but the personal attacks that would go on and on and on on one post was ridiculous.
I do feel that the message boards felt that because of twitter people could just discuss movies there but their format is not easy to follow.
I enjoy the site for letting me talk films would people, but I miss laughing with posters about certain shows.
Where's my crew at.
I have heard people say that Twitter and Facebook have caused a significant decrease in interest in traditional forums. I think you could put Reddit in there too, though it is closer to the traditional forum structure than the first two.
I really do think that's a shame. As you say, conversations are not as easy to follow on those outlets and everything feels much less organized.
I remember when social media first started blowing up, I thought it was a fad that would fade away. Oh, how wrong I was.
I don't get trolling either. That is fun to you?
I honestly started to notice it around the time of the release of the first trailer for The Force Awakens. That's when conversation stopped and trolling started.
Yeah, it's dumb. It just shows that there are a lot of people out in the world who are operating on a totally different wavelength, one that I don't understand.
When IMDB shut down the message boards, part of me was definitely disappointed. But another part of me understood the decision, especially considering that I had largely quit using them anyway since legitimate conversation had become more and more rare.
When I was looking for my credentials to come here and start using this site again, because I just can't do IMDB2 anymore, I starting googling imdb closing down their message boards again. I read a few things about it being a bunch of dorks from 4chan just trying to crash imdb, which they did. Whoever it was, something big started around the release of trailer. There was a ton of "black man" comments. Were they legitimately racists? I'm inclined to think not. I think they were trolls prtending to be just to ruin the site. Yes, they might have been from 4chan, might not have been. Regardless, there was a concentrated effort by SOMEONE.
There was also an element of it on the Marvel boards where people weren't legitimately discussing or criticizing the movies, but just interesting in wreaking havoc. That carried over to the IMDB2 boards, actually and the admins and mods ALLOWED it.
I was angry because I didn't have a place to talk about movies and tv anymore, but you really can't anymore tbh be honest. The game has changed. There's either rampant trolling, people accusing you of being a troll because they don't like your opinion, or injecting politics into EVERYTHING. Even writer troll people now. You ever read some of what Nerdist and Collider put out now? Fucking brutal. Serves no purpose other than to piss people off.
That's interesting about IMDB2. I took a look at that place when the message boards were first closed down and almost signed up, but I came here instead.
I'm not sure if this will remain the case forever, but I think so far MovieChat has remained relatively troll-free, at least from what I've been able to tell. I do with there was more traffic, however.
There's a guy named muscha on IMDB2. Made at least half a dozen comments over the course of 4 days in which he said - in some form - "I am glad Joe Biden raped Tara Reade." I reported it and tagged the guy who "owns" the site and one of the moderators. Nothing was done, so I made a thread bringing this guy and his behavior to their attention. I got lectured for "making a callout thread". I told the moderator to fuck off and was booted. I have no tolerance that kind of ridiculousness. Taking issue with a callout thread, but not the rape stuff?
They also recently booted boranicator for cursing at people...again, while ignoring people like muscha. Yeah, fuck off. I want no parts of a place like that.
Sounds lame. Probably best that you got out of there.
I am a strong believer in freedom of expression, but there's a difference between someone providing an honest opinion and someone just wanting to cause trouble and be a nuisance.
I couldn't believe all of the people abusing Daisy Ridley and saying she was a talentless wooden actress when actually she was fantastic and the single biggest reason for the commercial success of the Star Wars sequels. It was the same when Emilia Clarke was abused for her role as Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones. These imbeciles were calling her wooden and she has to be the most emotionally expressive actress going around. It's bizarre.
After a Game of Thrones episode they would crash due to the volume.
shareI don't think they had an exact equivalent of General Discussion. They did have the Soapbox and the Sandbox, I guess those would be the closest to what this is. Come to think of it, I'm not really sure what the difference between the two boards was. But I didn't participate in either.
shareThe Sandbox was for the kiddies and the Soapbox was a a more or less anything goes board for everyone else.
The Sandbox was for testing stuff out. That's what they call online testing areas. Soapbox, yep, anything goes.
shareOnly partially, it was supposed to be the place for the youngsters to hang out. The testing out business always puzzled me. What was there to test out ?
How formatting and stuff like that works. It's a common term for areas meant for that, nothing to do with the age of the posters in those areas.
shareWell I remember it differently. I had a look at the Sandbox and I didn't see any testing going on but I did see plenty of posts from children.
They probably only behaved like children, but then that was true for a relatively large number of posters there, and many of whom were trolls 😄
shareI think in the last few years there was an organized campaign to destroy the IMDb boards by trolling. Towards the end it was just unbelievable what was going on.
It did get crazy. Many times it went so far off track and at the end some of the posts were really hateful - kind of like the political forum here. Still I miss it for discussing movies and TV.
I watch Survivor and the threads for each episode went on, and on, and on - a huge following. But, there was an insider who apparently knew the outcome of several seasons and posted spoilers each week. I think things like that lead to the eventual demise of the boards.
I think it was primarily 4chan trolls who decided to descend on IMDb, often en masse, as they did to many other message boards, and try to destroy or seriously disrupt them.
I agree what was going on in the last few years was unbelievable, but that's what happens when you have virtually no moderation and a group of people determined on destruction 🤷♀️. Bad combo.
I don't think that's what did the IMDb boards in though. That was sheerly a monetary decision, IMO.
Agreed. Does anyone know if they lost traffic after the shutdown? I know I very rarely go there to check film ratings.
shareI don't go there much anymore either. Funny, because I used to be there daily. But I feel like they treated us members shabbily, so it left a bad taste in my mouth towards them.
Wish I could say they lost traffic after they deleted the boards, but there was a lot of discussion about that and judging by Alexis' stats, they didn't. Seems strange to me because there were a lot of members who posted regularly. How could they have not had a somewhat significant drop in traffic?
Yes
shareTrump infested at the end
shareI miss the boards... such a vast global community. They would have been more alive than ever during the current situation. Can’t believe it’s been over three years since they were cruelly cut off.
