When artists do different versions of their own songs

I'm usually a fan. I like a lot of cover songs as well, but it's always interesting to me to see an artist with a different interpretation of their own work. It's a shame that some of the best ones are live and not usually released. Thank goodness that wasn't the case with Cheap Trick

This one came across my " FB memories" today. I like it, but I think I like it better played 1.25x speed.

Do you have remix, or a different version you really like?

acoustic versions of old rock classics can be good. layla comes to mind by eric clapton.

reply

Layla is a great one. I liked a lot of the MTV Unplugged albums.

reply

The acoustic version didn't have the piano part which is my favorite part of the song.

There were some 'unplugged' albums with rock groups making acoustic versions. They used to be quite good. The Eric Clapton unplugged album was very good. Or the Nirvana one:

The Alice in Chains unplugged was quite good.

I'll check that one.

The Alanis Morissette one was good too https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xa-CZ58tuRQ

I wonder why they stopped those? I can't imagine there wouldn't be demand now, although a lot of "bands" use auto-tune and are not what I consider a traditional "band".

reply

I don't know. I think there's no good rock groups anymore. Modern mainstream music is either rap-like, electronic or heavily produced pop. None of them work well unplugged.

And that's not a 'modern music is shit' rant. You can find some good music nowadays, but the US and UK mainstream groups, those ones used to be very good, now they're shit. Damn, the best rock group rock group I've found last years is... from Mongolia

I'd like to see them unplugged, btw.

That was what I was getting at but you said it much, much better.

One of the greatest things about going to a Springsteen concert is how he changes his own songs.
One of the most memorable came during the 1999-2000 reunion tour when he really changed The River

The whole album This Left Feels Right by Bon Jovi.

I like it and it re-enforces that they actually do understand music rather than these "artists" who just sing whatever they are told to.

I like this version of Blame by Bastille. I know it's just Dan and the piano, but I love it.

Radiohead did two different versions of Morning Bell. I love them both equally
