I agree with you on To Die For. I didn't hate it, but I was so-so on it. Now I love it.

Barry Lyndon (1975)

i can't really think of anything where i went from one extreme to another.

i've softened on lots of films, though.

i absolutely despised a film called the future a few years back. it had wacky characters and scenes narrated by a pet cat. every single thing in it grated on me. i probably would have put it on a list of my ten least favourite films.

but i watched it again after seeing and really enjoying another one of miranda july's films, and i guess i was softened up enough to see some good things in it.

The Dark Knight (2008)

reply

I won’t say I hated it, but it took me a couple viewings to truly appreciate Joe Dirt.

reply

For me it was Erin Brockovitch.

Almost Famous. I saw it with a group of loud people so that could have been a factor for my disliking.

Many years ago I saw The Sting on HBO. That was when Home Box Office was THE big thing. It was a novelty. I thought the film was awful. But I guess I just was too young and/or not in the right frame of mind to appreciate it. It wasn't until years later that I saw it on TV and really liked it.

Another movie I detested when I saw it in the theater was the second Indiana Jones installment, the Temple of Doom. I couldn't stand Kate Capshaw's non-stop screaming. And the "gross out" factor of the meal with the snakes and monkey brains literally made me want to heave up. But it was on TV recently and for whatever odd reason, I enjoyed it a lot more (skipped the dinner scene though!)

Sometimes it matters on the mood you're in.

Hate is on strong but I didn't care for Step Brothers at first and then loved it to the point where I couldn't stop quoting it.
