Anybody else addicted to eating out?

I spend most of my money after rent on going out to eat. Idk why I can’t get enough. It’s hard to cook for one and nothing beats the experience and taste.

reply

Do you have any freezer space available to you?

reply

Yes but frozen food is mostly pretty gross

reply

I meant mostly in regards to cooking for one. I'm by myself half the year, so I understand the cooking for one. I like to make meals that I like, and that freeze well so that I can still cook for four. I do have the freezer room that I can freeze them in single servings so that when I don't feel like making something new I can just grab one and go

reply

Ah yeah that’s a good idea, might have to start doing that.

reply

Gross? How is freezing something and thawing it out later to cook in any way gross?

reply

I think he meant processed, frozen meals like 'Hungry Man' or TV Dinners or whatever

reply

Yeah exactly lol

reply

I disagree. In this fast paced world TV dinners and other frozen food can be fast, easy to make and yes tasty!

Oh, I don't mind them at all!
I do get weary of the damned dishes and pots every night...frozen stuff is fine in a pinch when I'm too lazy to scrub and scour the cookware 👍

reply

No, we hardly ever eat out
I like to cook, it's pretty relaxing if you play some music

The clean up is a huge pain in the neck!

reply

I'm a pretty good cook so I don't tend to want to eat out much. I find it disappointing and over priced usually. As well as poor service from the staff.

I do sometimes cook in bulk so I can freeze things for convenience later on. Comes in handy for work lunches and lazy days.

When I do crave something from a restaurant it is usually a fast foot outlet.

reply

i have to push back a little against what you're saying, because i cook for one (me and myself) and i generally don't find it to be much of a chore at all. and we live in an age where there are tons and tons of resources to give you hints & protocols for cooking. boundless websites & youtube channels.

i made a perfectly nice dinner last night with some potatoes, tofu, spinach, lentils, red curry paste & crushed tomatoes. couldn't have been easier, & i enjoyed it quite a bit.

i do enjoy eating out, but i limit myself to going out only once every two weeks to make sure i keep my food costs in line with my budget. & believe me, i am obsessed with the korma dish they serve at the indian buffet down the street. i would go every single night, but stinginess & a desire to keep my weight under control keeps that urge in check.

reply

No, I actually don't like eating out.

reply

Listen to me.
Don't fall into that trap that cooking for one is difficult.
The problem is that many people don't know how to cook but how to follow recipes.
And recipes are never for one.

Lets say you want to make: mashed potatoes and meatloaf.
Small potato, meatloaf in a mini bread pan.

you have to learn to reduce the portions.

I'm not saying sometimes there won't be waste.
Loaf of bread.
Honestly, I might make 2 sandwiches and have one piece of toast before it goes bad.
But overall you will learn how to cook correctly.

reply

Bread freezes really well. If it's sliced just grab slices as you need them. Just takes a few minutes to defrost.

reply

I keep my Brioche Buns in the freezer for when I want a hamburger.
I keep my tortillas and pita bread in the freezer.
I keep my cinnamon bread in the fridge (I go through that pretty fast)

But as far as bread, I think its a personal thing, it's not something i want to defrost.

reply

I was throwing out too much bread, so I mostly go without, but I do keep a loaf in the freezer for the odd occasion.

reply

I can deal with frozen bread if I make toast out of it, but have found defrosted bread just as bread doesn't have that fresh bread texture. Do you have any tricks for that?

reply

Don't defrost it in the microwave for sure. I usually just take bread out and defrost it covered with a tea towel. That helps it not dry out nor get soggy

reply

Do you use a damp tea towel? I'll try it. The only time I use the microwave for bread is if I need to revive some that's started to dry out and go stale. 15 seconds works wonders for that.

reply

Not damp. What sort of climate do you live in? That could make a big difference too

reply

Usually fairly dry. Southern California.

reply

I'm in a dry climate as well, but a little cooler than where you are.

reply

Well next time I'll try covering it with a tea towel. I LOVE fresh bread, but like you I don't buy a loaf all that often, unless I know I'm going to be eating a lot of sandwiches or something.

reply

I also don't leave them out long. I am impatient so I keep an eye on them.

reply

Gordon's comment reminded me to mention to look into muffin tin cooking. You can do all sorts of things. Lasagnas, meat pies, and meatloaf for example. Great single servings and you can get creative.

reply

I laughed at reading this because I remember the first time I made lasagna for one.
I cooked one lasagna.
Can you imagine, taking out the big pot, filling it up with water and adding one noodle.

reply

That's funny.

I found a recipe to make the muffin tin ones with won ton wrappers and that works well. I also make my own pasta and then I can cut it into the sizes I want.

reply

I hardly ever eat out, although sometimes I do get takeout.

Some things it is difficult to cook for one. Soup. I love soup and can make a whole meal of it, but invariably make too much. Bread is another problem if there's just one of you. But there are lot of other things you can make to cook for one. Steak, chicken, stir fry, salads, steamed veggies.

You can get the taste, but if you enjoy a restaurant experience, that you won't get cooking at home.
