What are some concepts/themes that wouldn't work too well anymore in TV and Film?

Thinking about the recent Charlie's Angels flop it occurred to me that when the original series came out it was somewhat radical or groundbreaking. Three attractive women being chosen to conduct special operations. Of course it helped that they were attractive but the show was fun.

This isn't a groundbreaking theme anymore. There are plenty of female cops, firefighters etc.

Another show Three's Company or the original British version being Man About the House. A single man living platonically with 2 women.

I'm not sure there would be anything noteworthy about that anymore to warrant a show.

Any other themes or topics that you don't think would work anymore?

Singing, dancing, performance art cats.

I watched two eps of "Becker" recently and both would not have worked now. In one of them Becker has started dating a woman half his age that in itself would be enough to create hysteria. It is played for laughs when the reason he keeps getting nervous about sex with her is that there is MSG in the Chinese food he has been eating. Cue accusations of insensitivity to people with allergies.

Oh and the guy who runs the Chinese restaurant is black who dresses in traditional Chinese clothes. Cultural appropriation! A lot of ground covered in a 20 something minute episode!

The other ep was one where the ditzy secretary overhears Becker talking about "giving" the nurse "one" and how she will "love it". Ditzy thinks this means sex and forewarns the nurse. A comedy of misunderstandings ensues. She tells him she thought he meant he wanted to have sex with her and he laughs she becomes hurt and then he has to console her ego.

This would a real no no today with #metoo and sexual harassment in the workplace.

What he was actually talking about was giving the nurse a pay raise.

Martial Arts Tournament movies. That won't work anymore.

Films where they don't spell everything out or even mention it but you get a sense for what is happening anyway. Just the way the characters behave towards each other or the way it is being film. They way they could do that with old films is amazing to me. Now they just show it all or have the characters explain it each step of the way.

Drive My Car (2021) is exactly that. Best film of 2021 in my opinion. Check it out if you like artsy movies.

I think you could do Three's Company's premise a couple ways.

The first would be to just change some of the social dynamics. So, the guy's mother is ultra-conservative and he's renting from her. Generally-speaking, society isn't frowning on the three roommates living together, but the landlady is. Moreover, this isn't somebody you can just drag in front of a tenants' rights board because the guy doesn't want to bring his mom into court. It could work. I might not be worth it, but it could work.

The other way is to bring in a lot more drama. I'm not saying change it from a comedy, but it would turn into more satire or dark comedy. You have them living together, everybody's fine, but then there's a "wacky misunderstanding" that gets tweeted by the landlord and/or neighbours and it's a #metoo thing. The three roommates wake up the next morning to find various news media outlets banging on the door demanding to know "the truth". Nobody accepts their explanations ("You're making excuses!") and they have to extricate themselves from this craziness.

I don't think something like MASH would work anymore. I don't think people would have tolerance for a Hawkeye type who is always bucking the system and at times being treasonous. War is kind of accepted now as well so people would just be watching it and thinking why isn't this guy being thrown in military prison or being beaten to a pulp by the GI's he is working against?

Hard-boiled cop character that disregards all rules and human rights but always winning in the end.

I would love to see them try a Dirty Harry type in the BLM age lol.

Harry type character : "Are you feeling lucky punk?"
Bad Guy : "Are am I feeling lucky? Are you Boomer? Are you feeling lucky? Look around you! Everyone's filming you on their phones while you point that cannon at me! They don't care that I'm a criminal motherfucker! They care that a white honky boomer like you is trying to stop me! You can't stop me!"

I think T&A shows like Baywatch should make a comeback. They likely wouldn’t be made today due to radical feminism and internet porn being so readily available. I think the shows are good for the imagination and also it would be good to see soft and feminine type of women on tv again.
