This is perhaps the first time I've watched a Tarantino film and not known what to think afterwards. Where to begin?
What I mostly took away was that Tarantino gets Hollywood and its social structure. There are the people who have made it to untouchable stardom - the "elite", if you will; there are the working actors who still live a comfortable lifestyle while getting regular roles - the heavies; then there are those who work for the people in front of the camera - the people who are just getting by and having little to nothing to show for it despite several years in the business.
I also appreciated many period-accurate details about L.A. alongside the usual Tarantino indulgences. That montage with the restaurant signs lighting up? Brilliant. Many other scenes reminded me of Pulp fiction in a joyful way.
It might be just me, but this Once Upon a Time in Hollywood carries a barrel full of laughs. I think it'll get recognized during award season despite being a summer film.
