Which genre is outside of your comfort zone?

Inspired by Catbookss's confession that she's never seen Terminator I was wondering what is a turn off for you.
I can watch Sci-fi, horror, fantasy, animated/cgi kids films, comedy, chick flick, comic book and historical drama but the thought of sitting through anything like James Bond, Mission Impossible, Bourne Identity or similar is really unappealing.
Not even sure what those would be described as, action maybe?

reply

Westerns, mostly.

reply

I'm with you there....😴

reply

Superhero/Comic books movies and animation are out for me.

reply

I felt sure that you would say chick flicks!

reply

This is true although I am forced to watch the odd chick flick from time to time. I recently watched Wild and Silver Linings Playbook. Musicals is another genre I don't watch.

reply

I dont mind a good chick flick, but I don't see many of them. Same with musicals.

reply

LOL @catbookss not seeing terminator😂 I broke that story👊

reply

See I didn't think I'd enjoy that but it's a good story, even the second one is decent.

reply

Fun for a popcorn delivery system😉👍

reply

Musicals

reply

And even then I like at least three...blues brothers...the wall...lil shop of horrors👍

reply

So no girly musicals then?

reply

Alright...you got me...I don't mind the sound of music...not one of my favorite things😉 but pretty solid👍

reply

^ I see what you did there.

I won't watch horror, and sci-fi and fantasy don't really do it for me, either. Animated kids stuff is fine. Most action films are too violent for me - there's enough violence in the world and I don't need to watch any more of it. Curiously though, I enjoy a number of British murder mystery shows. It's not about the murder, it's about the investigation to catch the murderer. I'm on series 12 of Midsomer Murders. I have a ghoulish game of guessing who and how many characters will be killed before the criminal is caught. Weird, I know. Or is it sick? Nobody's perfect.

reply

I'm really not a fan of those home invasion type horrors.
I get the procedural angle of the UK shows, I think we spoke about this before maybe? There's something a little more gentle about how the crimes are implied rather than the violence being shown perhaps, I don't know if that's it. Yes it's always good to guess who!
I used to like CSI and Criminal Minds funnily enough. Have you watched Cracker (UK)? It goes into the forensic psychology angle.

reply

I don't think I've ever seen CSI, but I did see several of the early seasons of Criminal Minds, and I thought it was pretty good. I cut the cord in 2009 and haven't had over-the-air TV since early 2013, so I'm out of touch and behind the times with anything that doesn't make it to Netflix. I've seen one season of Cracker, thanks to DVDs from my library. It was a while ago and season one was all they had. I'll have to check if they've added any more seasons.

reply

Horror is uninteresting for me. Watching dumb characters making dumb decissions is not what I would enjoy for an entertainment.

Sometimes, there are smart(-ish) horror movies where the characters were even a little bit logical in behavior, I'm fine with those.

reply

I know the ones you mean, usually beautiful but dumb teens staying in a cabin in the woods or playing with a oujia board!

reply

Lol, yeah... but also the haunted house genre, which is cliched to hell. Let's slam the door for no reason. Okay, now turn on and off the lamps really really quickly. Hey, why we're still staying together? Let's split out for a good measure. Yay, horror!

reply

^ That! The whole splitting into groups is very Scooby Doo.

I like the Haunted House thing if done well, but there are too many of those where a couple move into a new house and strange things happen 👻

reply

Interesting question. I'm reminded of a traffic court commissioner in San Francisco who made teens/young people come in on a Saturday or day off and be locked in a room with an officer present to listen to classical music for eight hours. These were persons ticketed for playing their music too loud, usually in a car. I heard it worked as recidivism rate was 0%.

So I interpreted your question as being forced to watch some movie I don't want to. The cgi/kids movies are out now as my daughter's entering college and son turned 21 this year (still going to college). I haven't seen any of those lego movies. Some crime or schlock slasher movie that is too violent and gross with no redeeming or thought-invoking features would probably do it for me. The CBM is getting there as there are too much on the market today. Going to chick flicks is pretty much a forgone conclusion with me. I'm not going to get *prissy* about it ha ha. While I do not watch a lot of comedies or musicals, I can enjoy them. With the above, there would be some degrees of pain I suppose. I'd probably be like Alex in Clockwork Orange with the no redeeming social values film or some badly written and acted film. That would be torture.

reply

Ha! I'm sure music has been used in siege situations too.
That scene in A Clockwork Orange always makes me cringe, his eyes being clamped open to watch all that stuff.

reply

Bad movies are a turn off. I don’t have any genres I flat out avoid.

Favorite genres are Horror and S F.

reply

Cool, do you have any particular favourites?

reply

Many.

Alien is a favorite. A horror story with a SF setting!

reply

Yes Alien is the best of both worlds isnt it!
How about The Thing? I've grown to love that one.

reply

Yes, I love the '82 version by Carpenter and the original black and white as well.

reply

both are among my favorites.
