Do Americans feel embarrassed regarding Meghan Markle's family situation?

It used to be that if you were to marry into the Royal Family, you had to be from a noble family, or royalty from another country.

Is the Markle family American royalty? Oh hell no!

I'm Australian, but even I sort of cringe regarding her situation. I feel embarrassed for her! The analytical part of me says "well she knows her family and she chose not to deal with these issues a long time ago."

She should have contacted her family before the engagement and said "you're all invited, we're going to play happy family, please don't talk to the press or give interviews, just comment if asked "we're delighted for Meghan." Not just contacted, probably meet them with Harry and smooth things over.

Instead we have the half sister saying that she wants to write a book called "Pushy Princess." We have a half brother saying that Meghan is trying to play Diana.

Now the father has been caught out staging photos of him surfing the web about his daughter, getting fitted for a suit, lifting dumbbells and reading a book on English castles.

This has been a PR disaster.

reply

Why should we be embarrassed? We aren't all a part of her family.....
Besides, We have enough to live down these days! 😁

reply

You've been looking in the mirror again, Missy.

reply

If it was an Australian we would be very embarrassed. We are concerned about our international image. We initially hated Steve Erwin because in the 90s we were trying to move away from the crocodile Dundee image and promote the “clever country” image, and he arrived with his “crickey” and jumping on top of crocs.

Only when he became beloved overseas did we realise he was a talent.

reply

Hi Night!
I can assure you that EVERYBODY digs the Aussies
Your people took a strong defensive stance during WWII, then jumped in for the US during our Cold War with Russia and are always sweet to meet

Trust me Amigo, i gab with all comers...Australians are liked and admired by everyone...no lie man!
The croc's, pick-up trucks and boomerangs are all part of the charm

Now throw another shrimp on the barby for me:)

reply

Thanks for the support. By the way, our most iconic line “throw another shrimp on the barbie” is actually not an Australian saying, as we call a shrimp a prawn, so it’s technically translated for American audiences.

reply

Good to know
Thanks
Ive gotta make it to your part of the world...Australia is well regarded here and has a huge reputation for hospitality, beauty and history

Thx Night

reply

Most Americans I’ve met here say they like it so come on down:)

reply

I second this.

I used to work for a small Australian company and everyone was just so cool. They party like animals too. I used to go on major benders with the company's in house lawyer. That was a blast. ;D

Aussies are great and are generally highly regarded in the states. I used to be a fan of Paul Hogan's comedy show as a little kid before the Croc movie franchise.

I also have a hilarious personal story that you being Australian might appreciate. I was hit on by Molly Meldrum. I was young and naive and had no idea that's what he had in mind when I was introduced to him by Michael Jackson's publicist while attending a music conference in Miami a few decades ago. The publicist told me he's considered a legend in Australia and to just ask any Australian about him, so when I later worked for the Australian company they all thought it was a riot when I shared that story.

reply

Wow, that’s cool. Are you male or female? He was into women but ended up batting for the other team.

reply

I'm a straight guy, which is probably why I was so oblivious while it was happening. I just remember being introduced by the publicist to this old guy in a cowboy hat she said was a legend in Australia and him sitting down and having a long friendly conversation with me.

I was high as a kite in the VIP section of this club and clueless until afterwards my colleagues, who had been talking to the publicist the whole time, were like "wow, you got hit on by Molly Meldrum". That's when I first learned from them that Molly was this legendary Australian queen. :D

reply

I didn’t know he was gay until 95, when Pamela Andseson appeared at a music award show in Australia and Molly said “a dress like that could convert a man.”

He was jokingly called “Michael Jackson’s pimp downunder” because he hosted specials every time Michael released a top video and interviewed him three times.

reply

Are you serious?!

That's hysterical!!!

I had no idea he had that professional link to Michael Jackson! I always thought it was just one of those weird random things that Michael Jackson's publicist just happened to know this Australian queen Molly that night who asked her to approach me to introduce him.

That is FUNNY! Wow.

reply

He interviewed him in 77, 87 and 96.

His 77 interview is good. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=n5P7iunz1Go

reply

LOOOL!

Yeah it does all seem to make far too much sense now that Molly and Michael were birds of a feather.

Both seemed to have a thing for younger boys. Actually in that vid, Michael still WAS the young boy.

reply

Yeah, Michael was about 18 or 19 there.

I hope you don't hate me for this but I never liked that guy, not one little bit.
It had nothing to do with him being Aussie and everything to do with his tormenting animals for entertainment.

reply

I think your country is awesome! I felt that long before the crocodile Dundee craze.

As for Prince Harry's soon to be wife and In-Laws, I never even knew they existed until he got engaged. I'd never seen any movie or TV show she had been in. I doubt anyone except those who know her knew about her family situation.
I do sort of feel sorry for her. It must be stressful to say the least, only days away from your wedding, to find out the shenanigans your family is playing with the world watching.
I wish both her and Harry all the best.

reply

I'd never heard of her either Margo. She is pretty and popular over here in terms of her dress sense already. I think she'll be a bit and as I said the Royal Family have far too many dirty secrets themselves for anyone to care about her background.
I think it's great that the Royals have branched out a little into a different gene pool. I always felt a bit sorry for Prince Andrew who was very keen on the American actress Koo Stark back in the day, it was frowned upon and he ended up with the awful Fergie instead!

reply

I always found it sad that Charles was pressured into marrying a sweet girl like Diana when he was in love with Camilla. Think how much better all their lives may have been, but then we wouldn't have William and Harry!
It is nice that this family is finally growing with the times and accepting the fact that they ought to marry for love instead of pedigree.
As for family, I'm sure that we all have certain things we really would rather not share with the world. Unfortunately, the Royal family has been out there to see for generations. I'm happy to see them finally bend and be more accepting.

Well, It's back to work I go. I took a break from my outdoor activity to check in on our evening meal in the crock pot. Looks good!
Of course, I got side tracked by MovieChat! Today I am working on the little barrel fountain I have put into the center of my front flower bed. It's looking good! Can't wait to surprise the Mr.!

reply

"It used to be that if you were to marry into the Royal Family, you had to be from a noble family, or royalty from another country."

And look at how all of that turned out!

reply

Hell no. I actually find the fascination with The Royals sickening. With that said, I think Harry and his brother are more down to earth and could care less about what people think.

PS "Princess" Michael of Kent should be stripped of her title for blatant racism. Seriously, what a sick bitch!

reply

Agree that the two young princes seem to be good guys.
Also agree about Princess Michael, yuk.

reply

good question, but you're going to have to wait a couple of years till I ask all 350,000,000 of us

Look, I don't mind the cold canvassing by phone for polling reasons, but I was right in the middle of a Bonanza (Hoss was falsely accused of murder) when you called. Almost missed the ending.

reply

[deleted]

so what was the verdict, guilty or not guilty?
that whole cast has left us.

reply

It was *real* close (whew!!), but Hoss was acquitted in a jury trial (and the town was in a hangin' mood). His lawyer was a known drunk that only Hoss had faith in (Ben wanted to hire one of them expensive Sears lawyers). Turns out that Hoss' lawyer actually knew Abraham Lincoln and Lincoln sent a telegram attesting to the lawyer's skill as a litigator (before Lincoln became president). So not only was Hoss acquitted, his lawyer's pride at hearing from Lincoln presumably will help him beat his demons.

I've got to tell you, if my heart had any cockles, they'd be warm indeed...

America has one royal family, and it's chock full of murderers, serial philanderers, liars, cheaters, racists, and narcissists. I can go on but I've got to be in work in 10 hours.

Here's the strange thing; they all look the same. Must have been some serious inbreeding going on in that clan going back more than a hundred years.

The Markle's aren't the ones...

reply

The Kennedys ??

reply

I remember a great commercial that said “America has had 42 presidents, but only one king”. An Elvis promotion.

reply

Michael Jackson. King.

reply

Micheal Jackson was King of Pop
Elvis IS King of Rock and Roll!

reply

Albert, Freddie and B.B.King. Kings of Blues.

reply

Total agreement here!

reply

MJ was called “the self proclaimed king of pop” at the time by the media.

reply

The Kennedys ??

Yep. Unfortunately.

reply

I am Canadian and I long for the day when we become a Republic.

reply

Good luck with that. Ben Franklin knew a Constitutional Republic was the best system, but he also knew it would be hard to keep...

reply

The Royal family are way ahead on the embarrassing family front.

I wouldn't know where to begin seriously!

reply

I have too much embarrassment for the political leaders in my own country to care about the Royals. Trump, his whole family, and basically everybody in power are sickening. So the tabloids devoured some vulnerable people prior to a wedding, we had our country stolen.

reply

Republican Trump just brokered a peace agreement between North Korea and South Korea and got the Chinese settle down on their nuclear buildup,
Democrat Clinton sold us out to the Chinese;

"On May 28, 1993 Bill Clinton signed Executive Order 12850. This improper EO changed the way the U.S. made trade deals with China and led to the loss of tens of millions of American manufacturing jobs. The story of how this was done not only proves that the Clintons are behind the loss of American jobs, but shows how Bill Clinton established a Democratic strategy for manipulating foreign policy that was copied by both Hillary while she was Secretary of State and Obama while he was president."

China desperately needed to keep its MFN status for one reason: only with MFN status could it get a huge discount on tariffs it had to pay to the U.S. With MFN Chinese manufacturers only had to pay a 6% tariff. Without it they would have had to pay an unprofitable 40%. So without its MFN status China couldn’t as easily compete with American manufacturers. China’s MFN status was suspended during the Korean War, but conditionally reinstated in 1980 under the Jackson-Vanir freedom of emigration amendment to the Trade Act of 1974.

This is where Bill Clinton stepped in. With his 1993 Executive Order, he unconstitutionally seized control of the MFN conditions, removing it from the involvement of Congress, just as Obama seized treaty control away from the Senate with his Iranian nuke deal.

Clinton’s Executive Order was issued at a time when the U.S.-China trade deficit was only $18 billion a y
