What were you doing when 9/11 happened?

I was 2 years old so obviously I wouldn't remember.

I had just arrived at work. I went in and told people what had happened. Their initial response was "That's not funny." It took me a minute to convince them it was really happening. Ironically a friend of mine was due to fly to Germany that day. He did not.

That night I phoned my Mom, and told her that I now understood what her generation felt at the news of Pearl Harbor.

Did you hear it on the radio on your way into work?

Your friend sure was lucky, if he was going to board one of the hijacked planes.

reply

Yes I heard it on my car radio just as I was pulling into the parking lot. When the first plane hit I thought it was a simple aviation accident. But when I heard about the second plane I thought "This is war." My friend's flight to Germany got canceled. All of the four hijacked planes were on domestic flights within the U.S. Ironically he died of natural causes a scant three years later.

I was 13 and getting ready for school,I think

I was asleep during day time that day and I was in year 10 secondary school, I remember my mum woke me up and told me about it (saying that maybe 50,000 or so people have been killed in America) and I had to run over to the living room's TELEVISION SET.

reply

Geez talk about exaggeration, was that what they were saying? It was 3000. I was in school, 8th grade, or grade 8 for you Canadians.

reply

Yes the initial media statements were up to 50,000 fatalities
I kept quite a few of the newspapers from that week

reply

I think they were basing their initial estimate on how many people worked in the buildings. It could have been that many except that a lot of people hadn't gotten to work yet.

reply

Yeah
High density area...thank goodness it was pretty early

reply

I remember the 50,000 comment and I was horrified. 😨

reply

Yes me too
An awful day

reply

You live in the Bronx, don't you? (I think I read that in one of your posts).
Were you able to hear the sound of the collisions from there or did you live somewhere else back then?
I would've thought that the radius of such a noise would stretch far and wide.

reply

No i work in The Bronx now, i moved far North of NYC a few years ago

I didnt hear anything at my job that day

I was watching the morning news and they were reporting that an airplane had crashed into one of the World Trade Center buildings. At that time it was believed that this was just a tragic accident. Then the second plane slammed into the other building live on TV. When this happened the newscaster went silent for a few seconds then said something like, "This is no accident. It looks like we're under attack." That sent a chill down my spine. I didn't go to work and I pretty much just watched the news all day.

I had just completed some intimacy and was looking forward to watching Quincy M.E. on BBC 1, the news was on and they were reporting on the first plane crash. Saw the second live as it happened.

Went to the pub for the rest of the day and watched the news on their screens as the Pentagon and Camp David planes were reported upon. Watched until the towers collapsed and then went home again.

Very odd day. Quincy didn't get aired.

1973: Not born yet

2001: Watching some series on Norwegian tv, getting very surprised when they took it off mid-episode and said " We apologize, but Right now, live reporting on The recent events in the United States, seems very necessary"

I was in Manhattan when the attack occurred. Sort of heard the first impact, then headed that way after we learned about the plane hitting the south tower and saw the second plane low in the sky between the skyscrapers. I didn't see it hit as we were about a half mile away but certainly heard that one. We beat a hasty retreat out of there.

I was chatting with my mother when my sister came downstairs and said she just heard on the radio that a small plane had hit the WTC in New York. We changed the channel to CNN and saw that a second jet airliner had just hit it. Shocking, but I honestly wasn't really surprised it had happened.

reply

You weren't surprised?

reply

No, not really. With all the shit that went down in previous years (like the US embassy bombings in Africa in 1998), a big terrorist attack in the US was not unexpected . The manner in which it was done was of course very shocking.

reply

Sleeping - my gal called me and told me to turn on the TV
I was shocked and dismayed like everybody
Etched in my memory forever

reply

I was at work, my wife called and told me about it. Listened to the news for a little bit on the radio.
