Why are masks considered a political issue?

I suspect it has to do with Donald Trump and his hesitation to wear a mask, but I'm curious what you think of this.

Becuase America is full of a bunch of ignorant uneducated idiots who flunked science in high school.

The world is full of ignorant uneducated idiots. Masks aren't only an issue in America, though people keep pretending that is the case.

I know masks aren't the only issue in America. I'm not at all denying that there's other issues.
