I had always considered the rape line to be meant ironically.
Actors are much less likely to go in for plastic surgery and botox here than in Hollywood. This means that they might not look like they 30 when they are 40. On the other hand, they don't look like a mummified corpse when they are 50 like so many grotesques in Tinseltown.
Some of the replies to the OP are rather patronising. It is a long and complex movie with a lot to absorb. It takes more than one viewing to fully appreciate it's many subtleties.

Each to their own I suppose. I thought the montage was very classy. At that time mainstream movies were breaking out of their narrative shell and this was a great technique for doing so.
Came across it last night when I was browsing for a movie to watch. Absolutely top-notch psychological thriller. The two leads were incredible. I was gripped from the start realising I was watching a film that is guaranteed to become a cult classic.
Lol.
It was compelling drama but I don't really think there is anywhere else for it to go.
You may as well ask why there is comedy in any movie genre.Humour is often used to make a serious point.
Was there ever a time when people of any colour or gender were not genocidal, bloodthirsty racists? This period was certainly one of the worst in that regard.
