They used GMT time. Which is 5 hours before Eastern Standard Time (NYC/DC). GMT goes through Europe. IMDb is an American company. And judging by responses to titles, a majority of the board users were American. So the decision was very odd. I guess they despise their users so much, they couldn't wait a few more hours to get rid of them.
Aaahhh! Testing the waters at a new site with controversial subject matter.
This seems like the best option. If they do implement in the homepage announcement, and get all the archives from imdb.
IMDB2 is not really set up right, and TMDB there is nothing there.
There's PreviouslyTV also. Another empty website. And I don't like the bullhorn symbol shouting strict moderation and absolutely no political talk on their homepage. I'm no troll, but I don't like censorship either. And when it's announced like that, I can already sense it's going to be boring. Trolls are trolls. As long as they are not harassing, threatening or vulgar, let 'em spew. I can read them, I can ignore them or I might even want to answer them.
Yeah. They shut down 5 hours early. An American company using GMT time, the latest timezone on the globe(I believe). Not Eastern, Mountain or Pacific(U.S. timezones). I guess they really just couldn't wait to get it done.
Don't they realize that without the boards, every single piece of info at IMDb is available at at least a dozen other sites. Nothing makes them special or exclusive anymore. It was the extensive boards that set them apart from the rest.
Pretty much everything I need to know is at Wikipedia, with no browser slowing advertising.
You see? There's an example of a troll thread that was worthy of being in existence. Hysterical.
If you think Trolls destroyed IMDb, then life must be really disappointing for you.
Trolls have always been, and always will be...Period.
Before the internet, it was the sarcastic jerk at work, the class clown in school, or the bully in the playground. If you try to change your life because of them, you will always come up short. Like avoiding places you like to be because they are there...OR, shutting down IMDB. By simply ignoring these people, and a little moderation by the website, these trolls can be mitigated. Shutting down the boards was like taking a hammer to something that only needed a screwdriver.
Another (big) problem, is people no longer have any tolerance to opposing viewpoints. A heated discussion is exactly that...A discussion. But these days that's considered a bad thing, and must be shut down. Somebody's sensibilities might get challenged(hurt feelings).
Shutting down the boards was a terrible example of where were going.
And that other start-up forum, PreviouslyTV.org. They have a bullhorn symbol at the top of every page saying "No political discussion allowed!". I will have absolutely NOTHING to do with that site.
